Headphones are my main mode of listening, so albums like that tend to be the ones that grab me right away. First time I listened I was hearing muted chatting, fire crackling in the background of one (or something resembling it), creaks of a chair, it's like you're right there with them. I have yet to listen to it on speakers come to think of it.

yea, those are the things that take this over the top for me. i mean, obviously the melodies and harmonies are amazing but this is the good stuff. its sad that so many people judged this on a horrible rip initially. albums like this really make me wish i had the ability to play vinyl.

really really loving this album

Southern Point

Our haven on the southern point is calling us

Our haven on the southern point is calling us

And faced with all the obvious she'll carry us

Avert your eyes from all of this,

we'll make it all back

In the end you'll never find

You'll never find me now

But I'll return to you

When you return to me

In regards to the last word

It's the last youll hear

I'd never find any other

I could ever

I could ever

Never say it's the last one

It's not the last one

I'd never find any other

I could ever

I could ever

Two Weeks

Save up all the days

A routine malaise

Just like yesterday

I told you I would stay

Would you always?

Maybe sometimes?

Make it easy?

Take your time

Think of all the ways

Momentary phase

Just like yesterday

I told you I would stay

Every time you try

Quarter half a mile

Just like yesterday

I told you I would stay

Would you always?

Maybe sometimes?

Make it easy?

Take your time

All We Ask

In this old house

I'm not alone

In a bedroom, a telephone

You made a call and I just stood by

I stripped the sheets and emptied out the sty

And the crowds that light the carnival are calling us home,

calling us home

And all we want's another voice to lead us along,

to lead us along

Lead us along

<p>Even wasting my time with you

doesn't matter if I think it through

You took the car around another bend

Rand it in the ground, let's pretend

And the crowds that light the carnival are calling us home,

calling us home

And all we ask,

another voice to lead us along,

to lead us along

Lead us along

I can't get out of what I'm into with you

Fine for Now

There was a time, it took time

Impossible

There is time, so much time

All of the kids on the waterfront shyly raise their hands

Done asking for your permission, please understand

If we're all faltering how do I help with that

If it's all or nothing then let me go

If we're all faltering why'd I help with that?

If it's all or nothing then let me go

Cheerleader

Mention a name, we know

Appear tame, it shows

Please don't feign, the ropes

Always the same, I know

(I'm shooting them myself,

I should've made it matter)

God let it go, it doesn't mean a thing

Chance and sow, nothing changing

There's no time to go

Through the designs we know

Never mind, although

Maybe this time, we'll grow

(I'm shooting them myself,

I should've made it matter)

God let it go, it doesn't mean a thing

Chance and sow, nothing changing

Dory

Wildly coherent in a watery deep

we'll drop her down to the bottom

we'll drop her down

like she's nothing and the water is all

Oh the water is still in a wilder deep

We'll swim around like two dories

We'll swim around like two dories let loose in the bay

We'll miss the eddy

Hold on make steady, go

There is no plenty.

Even keel already, go

I can't be here all hours

Oh such a riot

I can't discern this trouble

Oh what a riot I can't be here all hours

Oh such a riot

I can't describe

I can't be here all hours

Oh such a riot

I can't describe this problem

Oh what a riot

I can't be here all hours

Oh such a riot

I can't describe this problem

Ready, Able

I'm gonna take a stab at this

Surely we'll be alright

Maybe I have frostbite

And when I shuffled on back home

I made sure all my tracks in the snow were gone

Tissue and bone it was a tryst

This isn't a gunfight

Checking it off of my list

Unable to write

Five years, countless months and a loan

Hope I'm ready, able to make my own, good home

They go, we go

I want you to know what I did

About Face

Without a trace makes me wonder

A staged race has no thunder

This is the case of our blunder

It's a fire

For what?

Time for faith we thought

About face makes me wonder

And in case there is no thunder

A bit of grace in our blunder

It's a fire

For what?

Time for faith we thought

Hold Still

Here we go again,

We'll carry on my only friends

I'll take one chance

Without compromise

There isn't anything left, to try

Here we go again

We'll carry but then again

We couldn't take this on

The story goes unformed

As if we never were there at all

While You Wait for the Others

While you wait for the others to make it all worthwhile

All your useless pretensions are weighing on my time

You could beg for forgiveness as long as you like

Or just wait out the evening

You'll only bleed me dry

Yes you'll only bleed me dry

So I'll ask you kindly to make your way

And what was left

A perfect cleft

We all fall through

While you wait on the answers that I'll pretend to find

Keeping up with the motions still occupies our time

You could hope for some substance as long as you like

Or just wait out the evening

And always ask me why

Yes you'll only bleed me dry

So I'll ask you kindly to make your way

And what was left

A perfect cleft

We all fall through

And all we want

And what was left

I Live with You

Return

Been gone too long

Return

And they'll try, they try

They'll try

To keep us apart

And they'll try, they'll all try

To keep us apart

But yes we can

You brought us this far

We'll do what we can

Return

Don't put me on

Return

Don't make me beg

Return

And they'll try, they'll try

They'll try

To keep us apart

And you'll try, you all try

You'll try to keep us apart

But yes we can

You brought us this far

We'll do what we can

Foreground

Take on another shift

Palms in the middle, hands in the middle

Work out another rift

Something is muffled, another juggle

This is a foreground

It is a foreground

A cross country miss

Take direction, can't connect it

I'm afraid this is

Ten detected, nine in a wreck and…

A little jetty fight

Pattern evolving, motion insolvent

Something about this might

Take all evening,

I'll just be cleaning

This is a foreground

It is a foreground

Wow, good find...

I'm loving this album more every listen. Need to take it on a long walk this week, really. Been recommending it to everyone too, so I can chat about it and shit.

I second this motion. At some point you may have to fight through an endless sea of jeans and plaid to get to the restroom, but it's well worth it. Best show I've seen in a long time.

lol, well said. yea these guys have really stepped it up since yellow house. im not sure i thought that was possible but veckatimest keeps proving itself on every listen. im still finding tiny little hidden gems in the recording. this has to be one of the best produced "rock" records i have ever heard. ready able gets me everytime, and its surprising how well they play all thier songs live. its a whole other animal.

Indeed, from a grizzly to a black bear, both quality bears!

what a thoroughly boring album. i listened to this based on all the praise it was getting here and in various publications...not impressed. it's that musical autopilot thing they were talking about in the animal collective thread. let's make this a folk rock song, let's put a beatles-esque harmony here....zzzzzz. i don't know why almost all modern indie rock is like this. just little pieces of better music pasted onto meandering instrumental passages, boring uninspired lyrics. i literally fell asleep near the middle of the album because it simply wasn't going anywhere.

Guest Wall Bird

I'm gonna have to agree with Zaphod on this one. This album has seemed pretty bland to me - having listened twice. When I get done typing this I'm gonna go lay down and give it one more try.

Agreed, the production (by the bass player, whose name escapes me) has improved dramatically. This is a good thing since his apparent inexperience in recording something so complex as Yellow House really brought it down a lot. That's not to say Yellow House is bad. It's just a shame to see such good songs so poorly recorded.

This has gotten me thinking about the possibilities and ramifications of an established band, such as Grizzly Bear, rerecording an album that has already been established as very good. The idea almost never comes up because quality albums often get a certain level of production quality the first time around. This puts the band in a unique position. Do they embrace their flawed, but completed, classic (most likely) or do they bite the bullet and rerecord a great album in a quality manner while perhaps (inevitably) adding the tiny refinements they've developed over the course of touring?

umm what exactly was wrong with the recording/production of Yellow House ??

yellow house is incredible

i used to share the sentiments of those that this album was a bit boring (apart from "Two Weeks" pretty much).

that video of them playing that song made me realize how seriously incredible that song is, and also now i'm going to re listen to the album see if i was wrong

his voice on that video is sort of mindblowingly good. real talent.

uh. as far as production i cant imagine anything being better than veckatimest. its perfect. there are millions of little nuances everywhere. fire crackling. chairs creaking. its insanely good. are you sure you are not judging that awful leak that came out? also, yellow house always impressed me, production and music, its amazing too.

different strokes i guess.....

I think that you've misunderstood what I said. I think 'Veckatimest' is recorded quite well. I was referring to how much of an improvement it's production was over 'Yellow House'.

To address Beatfanatic's question; I think that's the engineering is a little amateur in that the instruments are too over-compressed and as a result the album is missing a lot of the dynamic punch the songs would normally have had. From what I can tell, they recorded the entire thing themselves and since I don't imagine they were rolling in the money at that point I wont harp on them too much for fidelity issues because it seems unlikely that they had a ton of nice mics and preamps. Sometimes the mix can be too dense as well. Not in a sensory overload kind of way, but in the sense that lots of instruments are kind of competing for similar frequency ranges, and it can make things murky.
