there are these really kick ass pubs called "The fox and hound" here. they are really awesome, massive, pubs and i think they are sweet. they make me feel like i'm british when i go there because i'm in this huge pub with huge tvs everywhere.

ok heres the main differences i've noticed:

- bars are usually windowless or dark tinted windows.

- bars are all about the bar. you sit at the bar, it is the entire length of the place. few tables around but that overspill really. in pubs you never sit at the bar. most dont even have stools.

irish pubs here are pretty close to english pubs but i feel i could be glassed at an second for my english accent

any bar that advertises itself as an "irish" pub is paradoxically most definitely not an irish pub

There are shit tons of bars with restaurants. They are called bar and grills or just a bar. The food can be great or shit. So I don't agree with your bar assessment. My favorite bar has couches, tables and a crackling fire place and great food

a few summers ago we were all at a local dive bar call Just Jokin' after our final softball game of the year (16 inch, not that faggot 12 inch shit). my Uncle Ramos was hammered because he skinned his knee sliding into first and I was calling him a fag because nobody slides into first. Anyway, Ramos is shitfaced and this poor guy with an English accent comes in and asks for a "pint" - a word most bar inhabiting Americans would never use. Ramos is a total dick and he stands up and he starts mocking the guy "Um, ahem, excuse me may I have please have your finest pint?" All the fucking rockheads on our softball team were cracking up. It would have been funny except he did it in a terrible French accent and then told the guy "beat it Frenchy."

it's also a leather shop. you can have a pint of guinness and a pair of custom shoes made without leaving your seat.

no. this is a pub. food is for pussies (although the pub is also a grocers).

there's also a bakery in the back yard. they're very good at the multipurpose thing in dingle.

i think the architecture plays a big part in it though. you just don't get scummy little terraces in the US. and a pub just ain't a pub unless it looks like it should have been demolished 50 years ago.

they don't have them in canada either (somewhat predictably)

i know of one very remote one, krugers (one of three or four pubs laying claim to 'nearest pub to america') where the sheep farmers would come in at about 7pm with their dogs. they'd have pints o plain (guinness) ready for the farmers, and a saucers of it waiting for the dogs

i think the main thing which distinguishes a good english pub from a US bar is real ale.

they have a chain of "pubs" here called The Tilted Kilt which are hilarious, every waitress is dressed like a Scottish whore, with their tits totally hanging out, and gawdy "Scottish" nick nacks everywhere like plaid golf bags, and Braveheart posters LOL.

There's a place at 44th & Spruce in Philly called "Local 44". They have 36 local microbrew beers on tap, and one kind they serve in a bottle as a running gag at the bar. Cool place. Great food, too.

I personally am digging a pub called Cherry St Tavern at 22nd & Cherry, though. That's got some cool regulars and great brews, although I usually get the Woodchuck Cider. Shit's delicious.

there's one in orlando... but i never been there!

There are quite a few pubs in Boston since the Irish population is so high, but all of the pubs here in SF seem kind of kitschy and fake.

right, most places trying to be an authentic pub over here are usually posh hotel bars with good, but over priced beer and bangers and mashed on the menu, right below filet mignon.

there are a lot of lame to ok sports bars that most people go to, but its the dives, the tiki bars, and the weird indie art city bars that i like.
