pub is short for public house. this is the difference between a bar and a pub - the pub is trying to replicate a homely environment, a house for the public to frequent and relax in - technically you don't even need a drink, you could just go sit in there and chill out (though i don't think it would go down that well if you tried it). a bar is all about the drink - it's a purpose built place to consume alcohol. you don't go to a bar on a sunday afternoon with your kids and relax there for a few hours, but you can do this in most pubs. pubs also often have the notorious "beer garden", which, if a good beer garden, will probably have loads of rustic tables, a river, a barbeque and some kind of climbing apparatus for children (and drunk grandads).

i like going to bars on sat or sun afternoon when it's quiet. i like to drink the day away talking to people, like the staff, or my wife, until it's really late and the bar is super crowded and you have a five million dollar tab awaiting. then bounce over to the noodle restaurant across the street for some din din.
