trying to find an ambient artist

does anybody else find it weird here that most people mentioning ambient leave a huge gap of 15 years after their obligatory Brian Eno 'music for airports' name drop?

a few people are name dropping ZF, Rich, Roach but why so few people into ambient music pre 1994?

but i also feel like an old man because most of the ambient i see mentioned here i've never listened to such as William Basinski, Hecker or some of the other newer ambient musicians. I do feel a little embarassed for Oval being the newest ambient act i've gotten into. i need education on new good interesting ambient

# Affenstunde (1970)

# In den Gärten Pharaos (1971)

# Hosianna Mantra (1972)

# Seligpreisung (1973)

# Einsjäger und Siebenjäger (1974)

# Das Hohelied Salomos (1975)

# Aguirre (1975)

# Letzte Tage - Letzte Nächte (1976)

# Coeur de Verre (1977)

# Nosferatu (1978)

# Brüder des Schattens - Söhne des Lichts (1978)

# Die Nacht der Seele (1979)

# Sei still, wisse ICH BIN (1981)

I'm sure the rest are good but definitely get "In den Gärten Pharaos", "Brüder des Schattens - Söhne des Lichts" and "Coeur de Verre" . Those are the best 3 imo. "Affenstunde" is very synthy and drony but less melodic. "Einsjäger und Siebenjäger" is fucking fantastic as well but it is more ambient rock.

sounds interesting, never heard this band will check it out. Im a huge sucker for the 70s ambient shit

maybe im too late, but has any one mentioned Tetsuo Inoue?

he has an album called Ambient Otaku that has a really strange sound.

do you think my Worship the Glitch recommendation was shit?

what about this one - http://www.discogs.com/artist/Sad+World

it's hard to think of much other music like SAWII

maybe i just gotta listen to it again, but worship the glitch really isn't a good album. quite a disappointment especially from coil.

now it's not even stuff that isn't related to SAWII at all! now we're recommending (the disintegration loops again) to listen instead of SAWII!

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make by continuing to point this out. what exactly are you expecting people to recommend? I would say that asking for music that sounds like SAWII is ultimately a tall order, as it is distinct, so in turn people have (generally) referenced ambient music that is similar in mood, if not production. The William Basinski suggestions are only natural I think, because whether you like his music or not, he was sort of carrying the torch of the more melodic side of ambient, as opposed to heavy field recordings etc. Not to say he was the ONLY person doing it, or doing it the best, but he seemed to gain more popularity than any other.

That said, I think if someone was looking for older ambient music that wasn't made by brian eno + friends, Popul Vuh is one of the best suggestions. It isn't all ambient as people have come to expect, but I tend to get bored of a vast majority of what is considered "ambient" (mostly referring to a large chunk of drone), as it usually takes something special to hold my interest.

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

i think what i like most about this album is how buried and distorted the melodic parts are but most of them have a loopy flow, not a drone like work more like the later period Coil ambient stuff (ie: time machines)

and i'm still waiting to see if ieafs thinks this is a proper comparison heh

'Sometimes, Good Things Happen' by V/vm is an excellent ambient-ish album, that's got a SAW II-like quality to it.

There are 2 versions of this album, though. (both have the same tracklisting). The gold/yellow one is the one I'm talking about. The blue one is ear-rapingly noisy (but if you enjoy ear-raping noise, check it out)

Also, everything by The Caretaker (another V/vm project ) is awesome, (although not very like SAW II).

anyone mention the second half of "phaedra" (the song, not the album) by tangerine dream?

also, this is probably because i was half asleep the first time listening to it, but concept:96 by richie hawtin sounds like sawII without the melodies.

the marimba only part of steve reich's drumming, if you can catch it live.

forcefield - forcefielddiamond - music + video that is equally lucid/mental/whatever

uhh

surfing on sine waves

quaristice.quadrange ep

astro/hiroshi hasegawa - echo from the purple dawn

my favorite 'ambient' track at the moment is by japan metal half gods Boris, leviathan its called. reminds me of popol vuh in a way. i'll post it on special thread as its not possible here.
