Time to fucking re-label the genre

IDM as an abbreviation is pretty cool, but Intelligent Dance Music is gay.

What do you guys usually say when people ask what you listen to? I usually just say experimental electronic. This genre is desperately in need of a new label though, as its kind of growing and most people (correctly) think its a lame term.

when i describe what i listen to, i say it's more 'alternative electronic music' whereas it's not techno, house, dance, drum'n'bass, etc. then i let him listen to some tracks off my ipod nano

if i were to rename the genre i'd call it ELM - Electronic Listening Music

when I read/say IDM in person though I never say what the acronym stands for, it's meaningless to me its just the letters IDM I don't read the actual definition

ELM is an awesome idea chax. I'll probably start using that from time to time when I'm talking to particularly judgemental individuals

I dont think I've had a conversation that weak where people have to say "what kind of music do you listen to?" in ages.

I tell people I listen to a lot of different kinds of music. if they press, I tell them I listen to a lot of electronic music. if they then ask "techno?" I say "yes," because I do listen to techno. most people have no clue about the difference between trance (ugh), techno, jungle, etc. so what's the point in being more specific?

i usually say that i'm not really into music and that i mainly listen to deep space 9 and babylon 5 audio books

i have this conversation every few days, and i still don't belive people are fully understanding what i try to explain the music is like to them. it's difficult to describe certain types of music in general terms, IDM is something that actually surpasses a lot of regular conventions, so it's difficult to describe. there's also a lot of pretensiousness involved with music and 'scenes'. i'm just glad IDM heads aren't pressured to fit into some kind of alternative image/style in order to be 'with it'. well except for northface

i knew someone that only listened to music from star trek.ONLY star trek shows and movies, absolutely nothing else. he has a lot of issues

Issues like getting tailor-made Trek uniforms in his size.
