What Microsoft needs to do is to ship 360s with 1 terabyte HDDs and make all their new releases available for download via Marketplace. That way Sony can stick that BluRay thing they've got going up their asses.

Unless they truly went all-digital (apparently, you can install games to the 360HD but MUST have the physical DVD in the drive for it to validate), this wouldn't be feasible. MS has talked for some time about digital distribution being the future (personally, I think it will be another option similar to DVD,BD, and CD and will never replace any of the physical formats entirely), but you're right - their HD specs need to be much larger (even the 120GB drive they have is not enough really). I wished they'd take a cue from Sony (one of the smart things they did with the PS3) and make the HD easily upgradable without voiding your warranty - you can put any size serial ATA laptop HD (2.5" form factor) into your PS3 for virtually unlimited storage (biggest laptop HD right now is 500GB I think).

Also, Blu-Ray offers developers much more space for assets than DVD does - 10GB for DVD versus 50GB for BD. I think this was one of the reasons MGS4 didn't and won't come to 360, and frankly I wonder how they're going to pull off FF XIII in terms of space on disk - they're going to have to ship it on 5 or 6 DVDs if they use the whole double-sided BD disk on the PS3 version.

depends on what you're into, honestly.

i really liked:

oblivion

fallout 3

gta4

halo 3

mass effect

bioshock

conan

dead space

too human

You liked Conan? God, that game was ass.

i didn't anticipate liking it, but it ended up being a lot of fun. somebody got it for me for christmas because we have an ongoing conan gag and i make all my friends gather in groups to watch the first movie with the commentary on (highly recommended - packed full of lols). it's your standard hack and slash/platformer and it definitely had it's issues, but all-in-all it was satisfying. the fighting mechanics were actually pretty well done, you could use many different styles and the combat was varied depending on the weapons you used. the grappling worked well too and the game was packed full of cool references like the move called "camel punch". the bosses were pretty cool, especially the huge dragon. and it has light role-playing aspects in the fact that you can learn/buy new moves/combos with your experience points to develop your combat arsenal. it's not rpg level, but it's a lot deeper than most and a lot deeper than it appears at first. plus, you save naked damsels, you pillage and murder...good times as far as i'm concerned.

i dunno, i went in expecting nothing and had a lot of fun playing through it. i wouldn't rave to anybody about it, but i wouldn't diss it to anybody either. it is what it is.

also, there are 2 conan games, so i'm assuming we're talking about the one simply titled 'conan', not the other hyborian adventures one, which i've never played or really cared to.

that reminds me, i dont know much about the Final Fantasy situation, is it true that the video quality will be downgraded in order to make the XBOX360 release more compact, or just a rumor?

also, i remember you in the PS3 thread claiming that there might be a re-release of FF7....whats the status on that?

I've heard that too, but I can't see Square Enix compromising on their flagship title - I'm sure they'll find a way, even if it means disk swapping. There's other ways they can cut corners space-wise without compromising the game - what worries me is the most recent claim is that FF13 uses "near 100% of the PS3's power" - Now, I'm no CPU expert, but from what I understand, the Cell processor in the PS3 is much more powerful than the processor in the 360, due to it's multiple SPU architecture... so how are they going to leverage that kind of CPU power to fit into the 360's dual-core (I think it's dual-core) system? They have more RAM to work with on the 360, so that's an advantage there, and honestly I can't see what about FF13 would take so much of the PS3's power unless it features very detailed models, huge environments, and many particle effects, etc. moreso than any game that's come before it. Killzone 2 only uses 30% of the PS3's power to do it's amazing physics and visuals...

The oft-rumoured remake of FF7 is still just a rumour... Square is going to milk as much as they can from the FF franchise before they go and redo or reimagine their undoubtedly most popular game ever...

They also said MGS4 uses 100% of the PS3's power and it had ridiculous loading times, installations, and ass looking low-geometry environments with N64-like texturing.

I just read this:

  Quote
When asked how much of the PS3's power FFXIII will make use of, the producer told Japanese magazine Dengeki PlayStation 3, "Doesn't the demo use about 50 percent of its power? Of course, I think the retail version will make use of nearly 100 percent."

How the hell is this possible? Final Fantasy is usually extremely static and you can't really interact with the environment, so how can it take up 100% of the system?

Won't be getting a ps3 because most of the games I want are on 360 and not on ps3 and I'm not ready to jump to bluray yet. Although God of War 3 will probably be what finally gets me to buy a ps3.

Downgraded FFXIII quality on the 360 sounds like bullshit to me. It won't be one disc like the PS3 version, but I won't be surprised if it ends up looking a little better on the 360. It's happened with nearly every multiplat game.

It's a price you pay for not having to deal with the faggy red ring of death!

Also, I forgot about Mirror's Edge. That was one of my favorite games from last year. Really fun time. Liked that it strayed from the "generic FPS" mold the majority of games have fallen into these days.

The single player isn't that good, but the time trials are fucking awesome.

It needs all 100% to process the main characters hairstyles.

Funny, that wasn't in the game I played... but I agree about the load times... but thankfully they were few and far between.

That's what I thought too... although recently they said they've managed to get CG-quality realtime scenes for the dialogue between characters, and the transition from map to battle is very subtle, so perhaps that's where all the processing power is going to.

That's all very good reasons to get a system - the main one being get the one with the most games you like. Hopefully you'll get a 360 that provides you many hours of enjoyment and no headaches.

Visually, most cross platform games have been the same, or in some cases, the PS3 version looking better or vice versa, depending on factors during development. Considering FF13 is going to start out on PS3, I reckon it will look at least as good as the PS3 version, unless some compromise has to be made in order to get it to work on 360. I doubt it will look better just due to the limitations of the 360. This will also put "why can't they do MGS4 on 360" into question, I think.

Are you saying I can play the game without switching discs?  Do you need Xbox Live for this?

Nah, you can do it offline.

But yes, the disc needs to be in the system. Otherwise everyone would just run out to Blockbuster, rent everything, then rip them to the HDDs.
