i hope he retires Bruno after this movie's hype has run it's course

I've heard rumors that he's trying to get the rights to the OSS 117 series of books, remaking the (great) Jean Dujardin spoof movies of these days. I can see him doing that! He's already proven (Sweeny, Talladega) that he can play a lot of styles, he's no one trick pony. In fact he's one of the great post-modern comedian at the moment.

Anyway I don't see the problem with him doing a Bruno movie. I mean the studio gave him a dozen million dollars to write it, nobody would have passed over that!!! And add to that all the profit he's going to do as he's the producer of the movie. And star. All those % points in his pocket, the studio knows this will turn a big profit.

he's really milking it good then, im proud of him for cashing out on 10 year old creations of his but again i do think the guy has insane talent i just want to see it not go to waste.

the parts i loved about Bruno most were his nazi comments, none i have noticed so far in any of the clips or trailers for Bruno. B)

i never saw borat. i mean i watched a clip from the show now and then back in the day. but not the movie. from what i've been exposed to - the trailers, the youtube clips, "the reviews", all the people raving on about the movie... i started really hating it very soon, mostly because i didn't find any of it funny. it's just a lot of hurting people to me and that makes me sad, not laugh.

now this bruno thing looks even less funny to me. but it's interesting to see many of you guys find it smart and funny. i'll be making a thread about humor soon, i'm getting really interested in what makes people laugh.

sadly this is what i was predicting, not like the Bruno character on the show but a 2 hour long elementary school style gay sex joke. i'm pleased that other people are starting to notice he is losing it, i was feeling a little alone in my new found Sascha Baron Cohen hating

I liked Borat untill I watched the Ali G show and he did the Borat skits

it was the same jokes, so he basically recycles his own crap

i thought this was surprisingly funny (i've said in two or three threads that it would suck). unfortunately the audience i saw it with did not. there were a ton of walk outs and then just awkward silence during most of the big laugh scenes. some of the jokes fell flat for me and yeah, sure, the gay sex was absurd and over the top and obvious but it made me laugh. i don't get how it's "hurtful" or "sad" or whatever. it was just absurdly funny. i think people are taking this far too seriously as some kind of social statement or really involved satire when at its heart, bruno is just a ridiculous joke's-on-everyone kind of film.

Nirpal Dhaliwal is a 2nd generation immigrant, not Indian, and Baron Cohen is also from a family of immigrants. Adds a subtext that you might not be aware of. Upper-Middle class jew vs 'working class' indian. In the good old days we would have made the buggers fight each other to the death with mangos, and then shot the winner with a Martini-Henry and nicked their country.

Dhaliwal is also infamous (sort of) as the ex-husband of Liz Jones, fashion editor, hack journalist. She used to write a weekly a column about their marriage, her being about 20 years older, and they both came out of it looking like absolute cunts. As such nobody has ever been able to take his jounalism or writing seriously, cumulatively adding to the massive chip on his shoulder.

They had an all-gay panel on Newsnight Review last night discussing the film, and they liked it pretty much unanimously. I don't plan on seeing it - not because it'll offend my delicate homo sensibilities, but because I simply don't like this kind of humour very much.
