Bruno - trailer

Recommended Posts

Well I saw this yesterday and I'd agree with those who say that this isn't in the same league as Borat.

Many of the jokes feel laboured and the format does run of gas as the film goes on. There's definitely content that will offend plenty of people, but I think anyone walking into this movie who is unaware of that probably deserves to be offended. The satire is there and it does hit the note often enough, but the uber-homosexuality of it all kind of pushes it beyond satire into invoking homophobia at times.

All that said, however, there is plenty to laugh at and my favourite sections were (there will be spoilers):

  Reveal hidden contents

Sasha Baron Cohen is nothing if not dedicated to his creations. There are a few scenes in the movie that take place in the Middle East were he genuinely risks his life.

Enjoyable enough, but not great.

Just got back. Those were pretty much my favorite parts as well. Didn't like it as much as Borat and I thought it would have better with more fashion interviews like he does on the show. Anyway, I'm glad he's done with all his characters and look forward to see what's he up to next

Well, I was falling out of my seat laughing, partly because of the packed house I was seeing it with. about three people in the theater were laughing, one of them myself. I noted four walkouts, and as the credits rolled, the somber faces of offended middle americans made me enjoy it even more.

In my mind, much better than borat, as it didn't have the super bogus plot centered around the staged pamela anderson shit. There was much more candid stuff in bruno than borat, and yes the milli scene was absolutely hysterical.

enjoyable. but the show is better.

I was thinking "why does this article seem like it was written by my mental caricature of an Englishman", when I noticed it was written by an Indian, which amounts to the same thing.

Nirpal Dhaliwal is a 2nd generation immigrant, not Indian, and Baron Cohen is also from a family of immigrants. Adds a subtext that you might not be aware of. Upper-Middle class jew vs 'working class' indian. In the good old days we would have made the buggers fight each other to the death with mangos, and then shot the winner with a Martini-Henry and nicked their country.

Dhaliwal is also infamous (sort of) as the ex-husband of Liz Jones, fashion editor, hack journalist. She used to write a weekly a column about their marriage, her being about 20 years older, and they both came out of it looking like absolute cunts. As such nobody has ever been able to take his jounalism or writing seriously, cumulatively adding to the massive chip on his shoulder.

holy lol.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

Fuck You....

that's goiing a little too far man, I'd say at best he's the Mike Meyers of our generation since like Mike Meyers he has only played around 4-5 characters for his entire career.

Peter Sellers played hundreds of characters in his career not just 3 (cohen style ) it is not fair to Peter Sellers to put Cohen in the same sentence as him.... yet

Mike Myers? Andy Kaufman?

Sacha is showing the underbelly of America as it should be seen. The US population made up of mostly backwoods fools who don't live in big cities. This is the real America. City society is not an accurate example of what the majority of the US population is really like....

go to any small town in Texas or to any state with lots of land in between cities and there will be thousands of god fearing, gay hating, minority(any sort of difference) despising, uneducated assholes everywhere...

this is what Bruno and Borat are about revealing, not just about the humour but the fact that most Americans are bad for the world.....

Call me cynical but I am right...

Peter Sellers is a good comparison because Cohen is all about becoming the characters he portrays and yes, Sellers was more of a classical actor and tasteful comedian than Cohen but we live in different times that call for different levels of pushing the envelope, i.e. slingshotting Indonesian boys onto your cock, disrupting fashion shows and using CGI to make you dick head talk....

i guess my point is that playing only 3 characters for the last 10 years does not constitute pushing the envelope. YEah i'll be fair, when he started Bruno, Borat and Ali G i thought he WAS pushing the envelope at that given time, but 10 years has passed at least and at this point i see almost no envelope pushing happening. This is not to say that in the future he will push the envelope again, in fact i want him to push it so hard that he cuts his dick head off with a super papercut from said envelope.

the entire movie is just "gay stereotype haha aren't gay people funny hahaha oh look, they're like women, isn't that zany? hahah."

unlike the show, which used the stereotypes and whatnot to reveal how ignorant others were. or did it really? it's just an act for laughs. i don't think sbc set out to change the world using stereotypes to ridicule rednecks. i think most fans are looking too deep into this.

yeah, but most people just laugh at the fact that he dresses feminine, that the two men are kissing, etc. not at the idiots that get angry. i'm not speaking about watmm, but about the majority of people that see this film.

disappointing. i thought the trailer made it look great but the funniest bits were all in the trailer.

i like the swingers bit where he was stood around with his coat on

i didnt like the obviously acted bit edited in with the big titted woman whipping him

the main problem was the believability.

the extra work he got would have worked (been funny) if we'd known the show. hes too well known so its some unknown pilot i've never heard of.

the talk show wasnt real. if it was maury or springer then its believable. made up show with real audience.

the song at the end. now you know they know who he is. they must. its not clever like chris morris and phil collins, its everyone laughing at themselves. hey look we don't take ourselves too seriously.

as soon as you start mixing real people with actors/knowing celebs then you lose the realism. was that real? was that an actor? it was disconnected from the real world and thus less effective.

the imaginery bj scene was painful. maybe the point but i didnt find it amusing. even as 2 old people walked out.

the cage fight at the end i enjoyed.

the auditions for the baby photo shoot was shocking.

the message was either confused or didnt exist.

a huge stepdown from borat but maybe thats due to expectations

Apparently the scene at the cage fight in Oklahoma was provoked. The fight was advertised at $5 tickets in advance, way below the average $20+ prices for the area. Patrons had to wait 90 minutes outside the venue before finally being let in. They also advertised $1 beer for a limited time but Cohen's production crew paid the club to keep the beer at $1 the entire time. Combined with the confusion of being told that $1 beer would be ending 'soon' the crowd drowned themselves in cheap beer. The Straight Dave and I only use my ass for shitting shirts were handed out in advance to set the mood, and police officers were even asked to wear them but declined and insisted they needed to be in uniform.

a lot of reviews i'm seeing say

  Quote
It must be said that there are several instances where the supposedly real action looks suspiciously staged. The possibility that some participants are in on the joke blunts the cutting edge of Bruno.

anybody know where to find a cam or telesync of Bruno? I refuse to pay money for it, similar to my stand against Terminator Salvation

this is true, and i would also argue that Sascha Baron Cohen himself finds gay sex extremely funny, not just the aspect of it that brings forth homophobia.

BRUNO isn't an easy film to review. There really isn't a plot. I mean, there is, but its essentially about BRUNO wanting to become a celebrity and the various harebrained notions that he embarks upon to become an internationally renowned celebrity. He then goes off to unleash this menace upon the unawares of the world.

That I couldn't stop laughing throughout - pretty much labels me as a sucker for this sort of comedy, but as film. I kinda hate it. The notion of pseudo-reality filmmaking satires is kind of the death knell to the cinema I love... but it works, so I can't actively hate on it. I enjoyed it too much for that.

Now, BRUNO is slightly more sophisticated than that. I mean, the level of tension that arises when BRUNO decides he will become famous with a celebrity sex video - and schedules an interview at a hotel with Ron Paul. And when the lights go out, they go into the "green room" which is a bed room. The tension was extreme. Because BRUNO was in a bedroom with Ron Paul. That was real. Somehow. Doctor Ron Paul was in a camera laden bedroom with BRUNO. Everyone in the theater was in nervous giggle hysterics. It was hysterical. The knowledge of what was going to happen was so extremely delicious... literally, that is the sort of humor that Cohen is a genius at. Like Paula Abdul sitting upon a Mexican and getting water from the back of another Mexican. These are things that we must all witness. Because Paula Abdul did it. And she wasn't in on the joke. She showed up for an interview with no furniture - and when presented with Mexicans to sit upon and sit drinks upon... she went with it. She used Mexican Human Beings as furniture and was completely ok with it. And that was amazing.

Just amazing.

Paula. What were you thinking? Did you ever think... "This isn't right, I'll stand"? I mean. Was this not the first time this scenario was presented to you? Are you accustomed to using human beings as furniture? Really?

The rampant homophobia in the film exhibited by just about everyone is something that I went in expecting. And I just was sadly amused by. It is funny because the fucking idiot redneck dumbfucks in the film are to be laughed at. But on the same hand, it is a shame that such backwards intolerant folks exist. Of course, they came expecting violent cage fighting, not cage loving. And their brains melt - and the film shows their brains melt - and you wonder what happened when their brains re-gelled. I'm thinking they went home and put on THE BIRDCAGE or CHICAGO.

BRUNO is hilarious. It is paralytically funny - and I know I easily missed about 15-20 minutes due to uncontrolled laughter on my part. So you'll probably want to see this a few times. It is that funny.

SPOILER ALERT^^^

Atop nailed it. Yes there were staged parts, those you sit through, but it's gold to watch a parent tell someone with a straight face that their baby can lose ten pounds in a week cause they have "whatever it takes" that is what SBC is fantastic at, and thats why I enjoyed bruno.

I think borat failed at finding the balance between staged bits and SBC person manipulation. Borat was based around the entirely staged pam anderson plot which totally sucked. Also the jew household with planted roaches and all was terrible. the bear was also pointless. bruno at least had less of that, more of the manipulation.

Bruno is better...

and it is Harry Knowles that nailed it...

I just agree with his review very much as well and everyone hating on this film is hating for the sake of hating or not really fucking getting the joke!

Instead proving it....

America and most of the world, but specifically America in this film,

HATE GAY PEOPLE!

this film has made me love my gay brothers and sisters even more than I already did....

I LOVE THE GAY PEOPLE!

I AM AFRAID OF AMERICA!

only awepittence hates it. everyone else (myself included) was disappointed. we all agree there were great moments

but overall it fell flat. why did he choose ron paul? just for the ru paul joke? could have chosen better for that part. and his seduction was pretty poor. would have liked to see a more subtle hand on knee or something. dropping trouser is hardly a come on. he could have done something better with the god hates fags people.

i'll try to concentrate on the good moments.

the insults he said about bin laden to the terrorist were very funny. homeless santa and something else funnier i forget
