Thanks for this link, fucking incredible!

and you are wrong about the first KC record, it isn't their best but it is a damn fine album.

Don't dispute me either....

You are wrong!

Their first album is amazing. Im not a fan of many albums after that but there's always one or two amazing songs per album. Larks, tongues, and aspics(sp?) Pt1 and 2 are some of fav songs to trip to. Fripps guitar playing in starless is so goddamn beautiful. And the song Islands has my favorite cornet playing ever.

their latest albums are a complete fucking disgrace, and in the court isn't that good either. i think it's one of their more boring albums, always the one that people rave and rant about. it's quite cheesy and hard to sit through, though.

in the wake, starless, larks', red, discipline, toapp, beat, thrak - all fantastic. they made a lot of absolute trash too, but they made up for it by making that many consistent and inspiring works of music. and yes, belew is a guitar god. just fucking watch

. one of the most satisfying live performances ever.

i haven't heard a lot of their most recent stuff, though i must say i really enjoyed the 'happy with what you have to be happy with' ep.

and yeah, freakin' great video.

yeah, i've learned a lot about minimalism and restraint in my own guitar playing from that song alone.

might as well. if you don't like it then you probably won't like any of it. but some other will come in and tell me i'm a dick.

but court of the crimson king is pretty fucking awesome, i'd have sex with it if it were a lady (or a man/boy)

yeah, that's swell. i like Fripp near tottering off of his stool when really rocking out. a rare sight.

re: where to start. i ended up appreciating the entire catalog having first aquired ITCOTCK and then leapfrogging over to Discipline/Beat/TOAPP. that left the entire middle section to explore. kind of like archaeology, setting up the squares and then digging it out.

some of the new stuff is heavy as a dumptruck. its different good.

live 84 also kicks. one of those bands.

I'm sure I'd like some of it. I just never knew where to start in their catalogue. I liked 'Moonchild' when I heard it on the Buffalo '66 soundtrack and 'The Court of the Crimson King' from hearing it in Children of Men.

yeah man, everything from The first record to 'USA Live 1975' is what I love....

I think you would as well.....

Lizard si the first record that made me have to hear everything else....

Don;t like the eighties stuff because it sounds liker a different band and very 80's to me, like when Yes made music in the 80's same thing happened to them...

but I love everything Yes did in the 70's, not their first record, think that was like '68....but Yes is awesome as well

King Crimson is better...

and after you get your prog on with those two bands(you might not like Yes but I love their music, to get passed Jon Anderson's voice is the key, great lyrics though), if you want more I will tell you what else I think is good.....loads of music, prog rock and krautrock are genres that are full of amazingness...

Epitaph is one of my favorites, even my lady fucking loves it. Just try it out. In The Wake Of Poseidon is also a great track and album. but seriously, get Court of the Crimson King. if you can't really get down to that then you probably shouldn't bother with em. but liking the title track is promising, so i think you should at least download it.

that's silly - every incarnation of crimson sounds different, and if he doesn't like the prog-on-steroids of ItCOtCK (lol COCK) he might like the talking-heads-on-steroids of 80s stuff, or the metal-on-steroids of LTiA/90s/00s stuff

belew is a guitar god, saw him earlier this year with the power trio, it was amazing.

I feel the complete opposite, can't stand 80's Crimson...

But with that being said, I love everything they released from the first record to 'Live 1975'...

Amazing music!

And Essines, I hope you are digging the holy four Eno rock albums ('Here Come The Warm Jets', 'Taking Tiger Mountain', 'Another Green World', and 'Before and After Science') as well. They are addictive. Any dispute on Eno being a wizard is destroyed by these four masterpieces.

And what about "Apollo"?....

Also reckon "Larks Tongues in Aspic" is amazing, there is a lot of craziness in that one

I got into crimson after hearing maynard from tool sing their praises. First track i ever heard was "one more red nightmare" on a recording of maynard's "high five" from triple j radio. I think it's probably still my favorite track of theirs. I proceeded to buy the albums "red", "starless and bible black", and "larks' tongues..." All quality through and through. "Red" is my favorite. Fucking love that era of crimson. These guys (all incarnations) have serious talent. Highly recommended.

  • 2 years later...

can somebody explain to me what the fucking is going on in this. It sounds like the chords are constantly descending, like a shepherd's tone or scale or something. Fucking does my head in every time.

'21st Century Schizoid Man'

Best first track by any band, ever.

This may very well be true. Jesus, I never even thought about the song in context like that...

Okay, guess I'm relistening to/expanding on my King Crimson albums again this week.

The root note of the chord is descending chromatically for a full octave and then going back up the octave when it can't go any lower, creating that constantly descending effect. Fucking cool idea, not sure I've ever heard it done before... Beatles used a similar idea at the end of A Day in The Life, but it isn't chromatic (not entirely), it's strings that are doing it, and there's another string part ascending at the same time... so not the same, but it also creates that illusion of sound constantly expanding. Love shit like that.
