wuts dat, like a hott pocket?

Or a calzone?

Calzone has cheese. Pastys don't have cheese. A pasty of the Cornish variety normally has minced meat, potatoes, onions and root vegetables in it I think. You can eat them hot or cold. The casing is a thick heavy pastry. I'm sure someone else can give you a better description than that.

You replace that meat with some cheese and we're talking.

What about a cheese and onion pasty ?:

Yeah ok, good point. But you try distinguishing a pasty from a calzone. It's not easy!

Also, did someone change the spelling of pasty in my thread title??

calzone is a pizza dough parcel or pizza folded in half... made from pizza dough.

a pasty is a puff pastry parcel.

both are yummy.

keltoi factorama - i believe the pasty was designed so that miners with dirty hands could eat lunch without soiling the food, by holding onto the thick crusty part, which is discarded after.

Not many people know this but apparently the thick crusty bit (sorry, don't know what it's called) is so miners didn't get their food dirty, and could throw it away afterwards.

if i recall correctly from the vast ocean of knowledge that i have aquired over the years, this part is known as 'the crimp'.

I've just been informed that the crusty bit is known as the 'crimp'.

Apparently, and I'm only quoting wikipedia here,

"Tradition claims that the pasty was originally made as lunch ('croust' or 'crib' in the Cornish language) for Cornish tin miners who were unable to return to the surface to eat. The story goes that, covered in dirt from head to foot (including some arsenic often found with tin), they could hold the pasty by the folded crust and eat the rest without touching it, discarding the dirty pastry."

Cornish pasty rant...

I hate 'the crimp'. I hate how every time pasties are mentioned, somebody has to mention miners and dirty hands. That's not why cornish pasties have a crimp. Its because calorie rich, nutritionally deficient working class food has been re-invented for the middle classes, and to add a note of 'authenticity', a touch of the artisan, they've put a big crust on it. Pastry is a lot cheaper than the meat filling. Its not 'authenticity', it's a profit margin.

Shove your 'cornish' pasty up your arse. Gregg's pasty/custard slice combo ftw. Proper Geordie food.
