Enough people must still be paying for software to keep Ableton, Steinberg and Propellerheads rolling out new releases every 18 months.

yeah no shit, someone must be buying daws or else they wouldn't exist in the corporate setting.

Schools and professional/enthusiast musicians that have plenty of money to spend on them. That's who buys software.

... and propellerheads target the educational market quite a lot, so that might also explain whats going on here

i just realized how unfair this criticism of propellerheads has been,

after all they did invent an extremely important advance in audio software:

virtual cables with real physics that you can plug in and out of virtual sockets.

it's taken a long time for most large scale DAW programs to implement these amazingly useful and non cumbersome rerouting options. so we should cut them some slack for taking so long on the recording front, because honestly there aren't too many practical uses for that. instead we should commend them for putting aside utilitarian advancements for eye candy visual aesthetic.
