Just curious. What kind of mixing techniques do you think he used on this track? Its mixed a lot more even in my opinion than his other stuff. Also, do you think that he used computer sequencing? I imagine sequencing this on a machine would be hell.

There will be new love from the ashes of us.

i think he used knobs an faders to mix it.

or maybe it was his first record mixed sober.

but to be honest i don't think it's mixed any better. maybe a bit different since he wanted us to believe it's not him.

and i think it's all analog since it's clearly made in analord state of mind and GENERALLY during time leading up to the tuss rich was all 'puters are wack yo'

Interesting to compare mixing styles in RDJ's work. I think there was something quite exciting and rock'n'roll about his style of mixing in the 90's, which was certainly more simple and careless, but also much more immediate. It seems like back then most of his tracks consisted of only a few channels and they were mixed too loudly and with much resonance, and sometimes abusive FX that brought on nasty distortion (clearly, I am thinking mainly of Classics and ICBYD). It was against typical convention and probably sounded wrong to virgin ears, but it was also exciting and iconoclastic.

I don't think this style of mixing would work well on tracks like those of The Tuss because they are too dense with details, and they probably do need to be mixed more evenly like you mention to work well, but when compared to earlier works, they perhaps miss an element of excitement and immediacy in their sound.

This song intrigues me quite a lot, so I have a few questions that I've been dying to make. Hopefully someone here can answer me and finally end my pain. I would like to know what are the machines/synths/whatever that make these sounds: the mellow keyboard that starts at 2:57; the sound that starts at 4:03; and the one that starts at 4:47-ish.

I will offer you the universe if you can answer such a thing.

you should ask that question to LimpyLoo in the EKT subforum. he's pretty good at identifying production techniques.

All of those could be an Oberheim Xpander, but what do I know? Also, the soft pads might be Korg PS-3100/3200, but who knows?

I'd like to know.

wow i just found a new hidden thing ive never noticed before in over 100 listens

guess im just focusing on the wrong parts i really need to dig into this tomorrow

now ive lost it and cant find it again but i will succeed.

Found it, 4:36 theres this little repeat delay that increases in frequency and turns into a bouncy ball sound. Ive heard it a hundred times but never really "heard" it if you know what I mean and damn it's great. I knew it was there but I didn't know what it was. man

I know exactly what you mean. It took me a long time to get into the Tuss. On reflection its hardly suprising, so many paths to follow which ping-pong at hyperspeed in different directions. Which path do you train your brain on? The choice is yours.

that's a good way to put it, me too. and even though it's so rich (adj), it's boiled down and smooth, so i can play it for anyone and they'll like it.

lr10 is amazing. so many changes, and every part is awesome.

I always thought that the drums were put through a modulated BBD at the beginning.

Do you have an example of this technique? Sounds interesting.

Well, not exactly applied like that, but here's some modulated BBD starting at the very beginning. Rushup is faster and bit more distorted maybe, but to me the effect itself sounds kind of similar.

Cool track! And you're probably right.

I wasn't even thinking about the correct track, the intro to Synthacon 9 is the one with the vocoder/drums/synth intro.
