AFAIK, the Scriem track as we know it was posted by Velazquez on WATMM back in 2006. He chopped it out of Luke Vibert's 2006_07_03 Breezeblock set. It comes in 22:42. He posted it because it sounded like it could be the FM track in question. Here's the thread:

And here's the article with the "top acid lines" quote from Vibert:

the whole thing seems to not make sense, how could Luke be even tricked for a second (if indeed this track is the real entry) it sounds 100% aphex after only 7 seconds

2wv's suggestion is that luke knew about it and it was jokes/lads/fun. How does this not compute?

This is a real person? Is it some chick Aphex banged or something?

I actually got a phone call, at home from her - asked for a derogatory thread regarding this be removed. Apparently a friend of Richard.

Interesting. didn't mean to contribute anything derogatory if that's the case. Just unraveling the mystery.

No, not from this thread - this was years ago, before I was smart to remove my personal info from the domain registration for WATMM :emotawesomepm9:

We've all been there - Even one of the Ae boys slipped up once with the same thing!

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Is it just a coincidence that Tahnaiya Russell - Scirem is an anagram of: Ri_har_ _ameS - Tuss anyell (erm, wasn't sure what do to with the anyell bit. There's the girl's name Naelly)

Does anyone know who assigned it the name "Scirem" anyway - if it's just from a Vibert live set? Velazquez's file wasn't named that. It's short for "Sci-fi Remix" I assume.

I really don't think there was a Future Music CD. The magazine didn't come with one. When the guy who actually won the competition posted on WATMM, he said something like people can "finally" listen to his track.

I think Scirem probably is the remix in question, but the fact is we don't have proof it's even by Aphex since (as far as I know) the only source is the Vibert live set. Do you have any other info 2WV?

Aye it did - was how I found out about loads of electronic artists in the 90s/early 00s. First time I heard Ae too with their exclusive mix of Silverside -

wasn't it published at the time on the CD you get with future music?

it was never to my knowledge officially 'published' anywhere, from what I remember it was a song that somebody 'guessed' was somehow a remix of Wagon Christ's scifi staircase song from either an AFX or Luke Vibert live/dj set. If you try to find proof it's the real remix, it only seems less likely since the original song by Vibert sounds absolutely nothing like the remix and it's not 'relaxed' in any way (which is how he describes it in the contest article). So I think Elusive in this instance is absolutely right, that it is essentially fan-made myth that this track is indeed the same Future Music remix submission. For all we know this track has never been heard by anyone. At this point maybe someone should get a straight answer out of Vibert himself? Does he twitter?

Also listen to how the song doesn't actually end, it actually sounds like it cuts off somewhere around a half-way point when it just starts getting really busy and heavy. This is another indication that it was never officially published in any form. I think that the live set it was pulled from happened around a similar time and since it wasn't one of the tracks that made it on Rushup Edge, or Confederation Trough, somehow it was determined it was the track, how I have no idea.

as far as i remember the results of the "luke vibert remix competition" were announced in the following future music issue and luke had chosen 3 tracks i believe which were his favourites. the one he chose as the winner was the tahnaiya russell track in question, and i remember him commenting on it in the results article about the "huge bass" featured in the track. the article then explained that they had actually given the prize (which i can't remember what it was) to the second placed entry as they had later found out that "tahnaiya russell" was in fact rdj up to one of his pranks and obviously awarding a prize not really fair. i think luke claimed to not know it was aphex who entered the track, but i suspect he really did and awarded first place to richard for a laugh.

also hasn't afx taken some of the spooky stringy type sounds from the original and pitched them down on the remix? also mayeb sampled the claps and some of the beat and sped it up?

original:

found some of the original FM article also below:

  Quote
Sometimes reality is stranger than fiction, and it appears that in this case, that rings true - Richard entered a track in the Future Music Remix Competition (the goal was to remix a Luke Vibert track) under the alias of "Tahnaniya Russell", and won! Next month's Future Music magazine will have an interview with Richard (claims he's downright candid, unlike other interviews). Future Music decided to pick a co-winner (since Richard didn't really need the grand prize of sample CDs) so the runner up Michael Stephens was chosen. Quite the honour to have been beaten by one of the best out there.Vibert describes Tahnan-er, Richard's remix as "Relaxed and sophisticated, but with large balls and huge bass".

Wasn't the prize awarded to Telluric (from the golden age of Myspazz) ?

Ah sorry, I was referring to the specific issue. I don't think a CD of the Vibert remixes was ever produced.

no, it was just remix any vibert track as far as I remember. no samples provided or anything...

I don't have Future Music issue #154, so I can't verify, but a guy who entered said:

"Future Music provided 8 samples from Luke Vibert/Wagon Christ's "Sci Fi Staircase" for remixing."

scirem sounds like a lot of the EDM compilations, most specifically Men pt 2.

At least, there is similar repetition and these pads that float in and out (2:29 onwards)...

pretty sure Men pt 2. and Heidi Kann Brauchen are by afx, as well as Coronet (labelled as being by J.K, as in it's a joke or otherwise misdirection.). The rest sound like Jodey and other rephlex artists. There are a few tracks that sound like Aleksi as well. Data Sync sounds like it might be Ludd :S , or a vibert/afx collab....

oye, didn't mean to de-rail the thread, sorry.

Eventually I didn't finish my entry, but can vouch stems were definitely provided on the disc.

Thanks for this. I'd like to track down April 2006's issue of Future Music to actually see the winner list. Anyone have it?

Fun fact...The sound at the start of Scirem (which I've always thought sounded great in the track) is really just the end of Sidthug by Vibert (as The Spac Hand Luke):
