WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

Recommended Posts

Fantastic moments. Great effects, fantastic art direction. I was hoping it would be funnier. Those are my initial thoughts after just having walked out.

I think eggers helped and hindered. The writing for the monsters was great. the little one-liners and tones of each thing they said was a brilliant way to get a sense of their characters and situations without ever really getting to know them or have to go through the "this is blah blah" (even though they did eventually) However everything zaphod says rings true.

My biggest problem was max, and the set up for his running away. I just didn't care at all. I was just waiting for the monsters, who breathed life into the movie. I can't quite place it yet, I'm still processing.

My applause goes to James Gandolfini, who did just a superb job of creating a character that could be just the right amount of super-happy fun, and destructive hate and mix them all at the same time.

i should probably add that a similar film, spirited away, moved me to tears. and that was equally weird.

lol, I was just saying this in the films thread yesterday. I watched it again and it made me cry big wobbly Miyazaki tears just as much as the first time. Love that film.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

Spirited away is a fucking amazing film, my parents said they watched it and really enjoyed it, which immediately put me off. However it got to a point a few months ago where I'd watched everything except that, it was well fucking worth it. Would suggest to all.

it's a perfect example of how a score can supplement and enhance a film, too. The music is gorgeous. I have such manlove for Miyazaki. I think I'll rewatch Princess Mononoke or Nausicaa tonight (not sure I can stomach that damn Nausicaa flashback song, though)

I've not seen either of those, the only reason we had spirited away was coz my mum found it for £2 in Blockbusters and figured for £2 she couldnt go wrong. The film would be nothing without the music, and yes it made me cry too, fantastic.

really? I never saw adaptation but did see Being John Malkovich, which had this weird depressing sepia-toned thing going on. I get the feeling from the images I've seen and reviews I've read about "Wild Things" that it will have the same vibe.

you should see Mononoke then, you'd probably like it. It's like Spirited Away but arguably darker. Nausicaa is equally good, but the music's a bit dated (the song I was referring to was sampled in a Jega song, actually) and the manga is better imo. Both are intense films.

Definetly going to have a look around for these, stuff like that goes dirt cheap here for some reason, theres just no market for it.

You'll pay £20 for Die Hard 4 though :|. Thanks Lumpy.

If you have extra cash (I know, I know) and a sweatpants boner for Miyazaki I'd highly recommend getting one of the box sets of all his work available on ebay. Though damn, they are $67.00 now, used to be $40 back in the day:

I just bough a similar boxed set in china for $30, lol

Being John Malkovich was funny as hell, did Jonze do that?

yeah, I rewatched Totoro before I rewatched Spirited Away. Totoro is wonderful, especially for younger children, but doesn't hold my interest well on repeated viewings. There are basically just a few "classic scenes" with long pauses between them. I love watching Totoro with people who haven't seen it yet, but by myself I prefer his meatier, more adult offerings. Looking forward to watching Mononoke kick some ass and giant pigs vomiting bloodworms tonight. As far as I'm concerned Miyazake deserved a Nobel for environmentalism (certainly more than Al Gore). His movies could turn even the most hard-hearted industrialist into a tree-hugger...

*envious as fuck*

mononoke is just a work of brilliance. I want him to squeeze out another true adult thriller. Obv this is not the trademark "Miyazake" style (totoro, ponyo everything else) but Mononoke proved he could do it, and my the results were astounding. Last movie maybe?

Well I guess I'm a bit half-cocked since his film catalogue is only 3 strong now (though the skate video, Yeah Right! was brilliant) but I highly enjoyed both Adaptation and BJM. The sepia toneness comes with Kaufman, I reckon, for he too embodied such techniques of monotoned flatness in Synecdoche New York, though on the contrary Adaption was very vivid... not sure.
