to create the illusion that it was used/loved by someone

yes of course, but why make it look like that when it's brand new? it's so gay

Why have a painting of your face as an album cover when you could have a photograph instead? It's so gay!

Who gives a fuck?

i like what i've heard so far. i'm sure my girlfriend will like this quite a lot, being heavily into 80s stuff.

everyone needs to accept the fact that the warp of 1997 is gone and is never coming bad. its just your run of the mill indie band label now.

so you're saying all those other indie band labels also release albums like quaristice?

has warp stopped releasing electronic music? you guys are all carrying on as though they have.

at least Maximo Park is still the worst act signed to warp.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

It hasn't come out yet, fortunately.

I don't mind them releasing stuff other than electronic (I'm all in favor of it as I love Grizzly Bear, Battles, etc), I think people are just starting to question the quality of their newer signings regardless of genre.

But then again, they are releasing the Broadcast & Focus Group and Bibio ep, so I'm hot mad at them. More of a head-scratcher than anything I guess.

What the fuck is this pedestrian shit?

I'm not hearing anything that tells me this should be on Warp, and i'm not referring to the lack of electonics on the single.

This could be their worst signing yet. Maximo Park and DJ Mujava are pretty terrible though.

*sigh* could warp be any more out of touch with their base?

we're not their base ... and the indie crowd they are going for is a fickle generational thing .. there is a decent indie crowd but warp is ignoring them too .. grasping instead at fast fading half glimpsed derivative reflections played by monkeys in spangley fluoro hotpant jumpsuits ...

this only helps me believe further that the alt/ grunge scene is coming back

I was watching a music video program last night. First time in a year or two i've plugged into that mainstream of consciousness. And I basically concluded the same as you said. Well at least in the sense that the A&R people at the labels seem to be betting on a grunge comeback, as I saw it sprinkled throughout the broadcast.

On the positive side, if grunge is coming back. Then in an ever more compressed musical unearthing timeframe, can drill and bass be far behind.

;-] .. heh

Jesus, a grunge comeback? Post-grunge hasn't even died yet. We (or rather, the corporations that introduce things to the masses) are recycling things far too quickly these days.

I have nothing against real grunge, mind you. It's just that I don't feel that the alt/grunge scene ever really left.

Given that everyone's still busy metaphorically patting Warp Records on the back for celebrating twenty years as one of the UK's most essential labels, what better time to sneak out this debut single from Lonelady (aka Mancunian solo artist Julie Campbell), one of Warp's big signings for 2010. Before giving this thing a spin, I made the grave error of checking in with Lonelady's MySpace, whose 'Sounds Like' column features the phrases: "glitter of a waking dream", "world of the inner skull" and best of all: "that which agogs", reading conspicuously like the sort of thing that more established Warp artist, Chris Morris, might come out with. Except he'd be joking. I'm not so sure Lonelady is. The press release offers further insights into Lonelady's sound, claiming she's been drawing comparisons to PJ Harvey and classic Manchester post-punk, apparently drawing influence from "Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, Grace Jones and, of course, the architectural landscape of her native Manchester. " Well, of course - I was just thinking how much the B-side 'XY' reminded me of the branch of Next over at the Arndale Centre. Of her approach to 'Immaterial', Campbell herself says "my guitar has never looked so deconstructed. Its strings scalped, its neck bandaged and me and it umbilically connected - very David Kronenberg", proving firstly, that she sounds very silly, and secondly, that she or her people don't know how to spell David Cronenberg's name. All of this nonsense would be at least partly forgivable if the single was any good, but alas, musically it comes across as quintessentially amateurish and insubstantial despite being produced by Guy Fixen, a veteran of My Bloody Valentine and Breeders recordings. It's all so limp. Bound to be massive though...

And they're trying to sell it !

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Dang, if Boomkat gives something a bad review, it must be dog-shit terrible!
