Do we ever like to pretend that just because Aphex Twin's career is bookended by acid techno, Analogue Bubblebath-Analord, that this is what he was doing the whole time, and we all just misinterpreted it as "IDM"? What genre is Ventolin? If not IDM or ELM or whatever, what do you call that? How about Funny Little Man? I mean, it's kinda acid disco, or something, but it's also pretty well beyond that. Icct Hedral? I think that, if you look at certain records in the nineties, MHTRTC, Tri-Rep, Orblivion, ICBYD, etc., even though they are different there IS a commonality to them, and they DO have something above and beyond anything else seen before in electronic music. To say Aphex Twin just fit in with Ceephax, DMX Krew, Drexciya, etc. all along and we just misunderstood, well that is rewriting history.

See, to me what set some of these artists apart was the interest in those like John Cage, Stockhausen, Zoviet France, Hafler Trio. The experimental and musique concrete. You don't find that so much at a rave. If one isn't going to call that IDM, well then they are certainly going to call it something similar. The problem with IDM for me isn't the word intelligent but the word dance, because some of it isn't even really dance music.
