twin peaks

i'm not a lynch devotee. i think mulholland drive is one of the best movies of the last ten years. i've seen lost highway, and parts of it work, parts of it don't. i hate dune. i haven't seen anything else that lynch has made. i understand that his style takes some getting used to, and i believe that when he's firing on all cylinders, as he does with mulholland drive, he creates an atmosphere that approximates a nightmare better than any horror movie ever can.

so i want you guys to explain to me how something like this can be considered good. it's obviously terrible. unless there's something tongue in cheek about it, or ironic, or it's somehow hip like every other fashionable artifact of the eighties and early nineties. is there some historical critical perspective that i need in order to appreciate the level of shittiness present in the first episode of this show? how the hell is this considered a classic? as soon as the old guy goes "laura palmer" and that ridiculous soap opera music starts playing, i just started laughing. is this actually a comedy? the acting and direction is atrocious and stilted even by lynch standards, there's nothing artful or interesting about the camera work...i'm dying to know why i should watch another episode, let alone two seasons and a movie.

you should watch them in order to retain your cinematic dignity.

(although you can skip season 2 and still retain your street cred)

see, there we go with the facepalms. explain, please, for fucks sake, why this show is actually good. i'm not shitting all over the beatles here, i'm saying a show that has all the characteristics of a bad movie is what it is: bad. so why is it good? is this an irony thing?

i never liked it but i also didn't give it much thought/credit.

When I want to watch what happens next I consider it good

I watched this series because I liked most of lynch's work and had never seen all of Twin Peaks

I found myself always wanting to see what would happen next or how the story would pan out

Compared to other stuff on TV it's good because it's different

The only parts (I felt) showed any lynch style was the first and last episodes

everything else is very 'normal', for lack of a better term but I liked the characters and the mood

do NOT take the weird elements of the show seriously. that's all i have to say. keep watching the show, it'll make more sense

i love lynch, and coincidentally i just watched the twin peaks pilot episode last night--never seen even 5 seconds of the show until then. i loved it and can't wait til the next disc arrives!

i was smiling with glee at so many parts, and it didn't seem to be nearly as "weird" as everyone's comments had me expecting. only the pilot so far though, so yeah.

i dunno, i eat that shit up. the deer head on the conference table, the crying cop, the flubbed line that lynch left in (i had read about it beforehand on wikipedia or some shit... it really was great to leave in--it just works) ... they all just tickle me in lovely places. kyle's character and his portrayal are sublime too. i never really cared for his acting in the other lynch films, but he's awesome here.

Also zaphod, how have you not seen elephant man or blue velvet?

I liked the first and last episodes, but you need to watch everything in between for it to make some sense

The real question is Zaphod, what is there NOT to like?

i do think you have to really dig david lynch to dig the show though. there are indeed moments of stiltedness and soapyness, but it IS a soap at its core, and it's from 1990. it's a david lynch soap from the 90s, and that's exactly how it plays. if you're not wild about lynch and get hung up on the soapy aspects, i can certainly see that you wouldn't care for it.

but again, i've only seen the pilot. and i'm also a fanboy. i admit it. i love lynch, and angelo badalamenti too (music).

the thing is, I'm actually not a huge lynch fan myself - he's not as near and dear to my heart as say, Tarkovsky or Herzog - but even so, I don't get your intense dislike. Admit it, you're just bored and trolling

Twin Peaks the show is about the only Lynch thing i could not get into that much, but i like it in theory. watching it from the very first episode didn't really suck me in but i've heard season 2 gets better

i knew nothing about it going in, so the fact that's it's meant to be taken in the context of a soap opera doesn't matter. all i knew was that it's supposedly one of the best shows ever made. i'd rather just watch garth marenghi's darkplace.

I love it, but I can see how its either a love it or hate it type thing

it's all about the space in between.

it's about the feeling of things more then how they look.

it a mood, it's emotion, it's like nothing else, it's david lynch.

some like it and some don't .

well i mean, it's not hilarious... but there's definitely some lighthearted jabs at the genre. it's not like garth marenghi is to that sort of twilight zone type show. if anything i just like that warm-heartedness of a lot of the humour.

 

i think it's overrated definitely. but the reason i like it is for the same reasons that lynch seemed to want to make it - how everything is really slowly moving and kind of dripping with the atmosphere of the place. there's probably also a nostalgia element cause it reminds me of the first things i ever watched on TV when i was growing up - stuff like eerie indiana or sitcom things like doogie howser and that.

 

i think it's a little like sonic youth are to certain people into music or something - they overrate it because it's their first exposure to something slightly left-of-centre which is probably why i liked it a lot more when i first saw it . for some reason though in the last two years i've heard TP mentioned way more than ever before that, by sort of... 18 year old girls that wear cardigans. that 20 year cycle i guess.
