How one ambient artist can stand out over another, I'm not sure. Why Andy Stott gets so much praise, you've fucking got me on that one. I like a lot of it but it's almost against the nature of the genre to have something stand out over another. I mean if somethings grabbing you, it's so individual and unique to each listener via the element somewhere in the mash that's doing it.

Bersarin Quartett is amazing. Is anyone familiar with the solo works of Jean-Michel or Thomas Bücker?

I was thinking this about some of the really minimal drone ambient that I like. Two that I keep coming back to are Stephan Mathieau - Remain, and a newish Kevin Drumm album, Tannenbaum. But they're both just these long continuous tones with very minor variation. Sounds like anyone could do it.

I dont consider Andy Stott ambient, but I agree that I'm not crazy about his new sludgy direction. His techno of a few years ago is still quite good.

I suppose it depends on how you define ambient really. But it's not that difficult to see that someone like Pete Namlook (I've been listening to his Silence series a lot lately) is worlds away from say, Oren Ambarchi (whose record from last year "Sagittarian Domain" is fucking massive, by the way).

Yeah I mean there's so many different styles and vibes with ambient music. Beyond that, some artists just stand out by their production, where the elements in a Carbon Based Lifeforms song, for example, sound cheap. Biosphere sounds nothing like Taylor Deupree, for instance, even in mood. Different approaches in sound design, composition, etc., just like any genre.

Same. I've been familiar with the label for years, and have enjoyed releases here and there, but I didn't really "get" most of it till last year, especially Taylor Deupree's work.

I just discovered the 12k label a few days ago thanks to this thread. So much great music! It's really exciting. Just wanted to say thanks to Tauhid for that post. I've been away from ambient music for a couple of years, and this label has really reminded me how amazing it can be.

Lunar Miasma - Observing the Universe

Someone posted one of the tracks from that album in the listening thread I think. I picked it up back in March. As good as any Basinski, if not better. Been listening to it a lot.
