Has anyone seen this article? Although it is missing a few key artists and labels, I thought it was surprisingly comprehensive. It covers more that pure ambient music too, which I think is great. I agree with the argument that ambient itself isn't a scene or genre, but instead it's a useful term used for several different sub-cultural margins to other scenes. I learned a lot of new names too (mostly in the trance section. I've never paid all that much attention to trance, but I'll definitely listen to those mentioned soon).
It's definitely useful to people just getting into ambient music, and I will absolutely recommend it to people who show interest in any of the things listed here.

how 'big' is ambient on vinyl still? I was pondering pressing up Delta Quadrant or part of Ambiente but not sure if it would be worth it

It's still there. Some of us think it's not really suited for the vinyl medium, but people love their wax. I'd say for the most part, it's a CD genre, but yeah, I've seen a fair amount of ambient LPs in recent years.

If the tracks will fit a side on vinyl, then why not. If it means splitting or editing tracks to fit a side of vinyl, then IMO it gets iffy, especially splitting. Some might also have problems getting up and flipping the record because they want a complete ambient experience with no distractions.

yeah good point, I suppose it would make more sense to make an ambient album with the format length in mind

i have a ktl live lp (pita/soma collab) that cuts violently in the middle of a long track, after a few spins, you get used to it but almost expect the track to cut at every loop (its loop based muisc), so its trully disturbing. regarding recent ambient music, the best stuff i heard in this field might be the ending of the sakamoto/taylor deupree live collab, i guess i should get their cd, the last twenty minute of their boiler room set is beautiful, its mostly concrete & weirdo improvisation, but, slowly some killer ambient loops appears (without noticing), truly well done :

I liked that Deupree and Sakamoto collab, got the CD, but it didn't click with me as much as that second Fennesz Sakamoto collab, Cendre. I'd rate that collab #1.

I got this a while ago but have criminally neglected it... will have to give it another spin asap

lets all take a moment to remember the OP of this thread is now banned and must have fucked up big time to earn that red tint to his username </3

Great for summer and fall. One of my favorite albums. Doesn't get much deeper than this:
