James Cameron's Avatar

watched this at the imax and the visuals really blew me away, didnt expect anything much storywise as it was a 12a

there was a bunch of us got there really early to get in front of all the geeks and nerds

how surprised we were when the geeks and nerds turned out to be us, lol first in the que, best seats in the house tho

would go see this in 3d again in a minute

I just downloaded the score and its really great imo. First time I saw the movie I didn't think much of it... cause it kind of was lost in the visuals... but the score is extremely well paced and memorable now. This truly is one of those movies that gets better and better I think.

you're kidding !? the score was horrid!

na dude, its a traditional score, but it works well with the film and hits the right emotional notes imo. I mean if it was up to me I would have done something dramatically different for the score, incorporating more of the type of music we here at WATMM enjoy... but for a classical score it was good. Nothing amazing, but good.

ok I can be the best defender of Avatar but there is something you need to learn about music score composers : James Horner is a hack. He doesn't just borrows artisitically like others do, he blattently steals and even rips himself for the past three decades.

The score sucks. It's really sub-part Horner. While yeah he's a hack, he's also capable of great scores (Khan, Krull, Aliens, Apollo 13, Legends of the Fall, etc..), heck i've got more than 30 scores of his. But Avatar is NOT good. It fucking sucks even.

I am honestly impressed by the score... but I will admit to being a very big noob when it comes to his music and most "movie scores"... and this isn't the first time I have heard that he rips stuff off, including his own.

My comment was more reacting to my first feelings of the score which was "poor" to now hearing it after a few more times, and actually digging the emotion thats in it. Nothing original, but memorable in parts and brings backs the visuals of the film.

And as I said, if it was up to me, I would have done something completely different for a score.

I will admit to being fully obsessed with this film that I am deluded from my normal critical self. So take all my comments as a form of exaggeration for your feelings even though I am being honest.

james horner has been out of good ideas for a long time, but saying that i was actually very pleased to hear some of the generic Aliens cues coming back in during the big ariel battle scene. probably because those action movie cues are so ingrained into my memory as like bread and butter great action movie soundtrack music

okay here i go:

I enjoyed it but somehow cameron managed to fascinate and bore me at the same time.

It has been said before but pandora is the only star of this movie.

I'll comment more when i recollect my thoughts.

BTW, karmakramer warned me about seeing this in realD as opposed to some other form of vieweing 3d, i suspect i saw it in the wrong one (a friend commented a loss of quality with the 3d), how can i know for sure?. (i don't think we have a choice over here).

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

Did your glasses say RealD on them?

Hmmm... not sure then. How was the 3D overall? It should have been smooth as butter and should have not been at all distracting an hour or so in (if it was your first 3D movie)...?

I've only seen it on RealD, bigger screen each time (working my way up)... and I really can't see a decent argument why you would not like 3D... its not straining and it makes everything look and feel more real.

my friend saw it before in 2d and actually said he preferred it over 3d because of a loss in quality, sometimes i guess things didn't look pristine.

it actually was my first 3d movie and overall it was good i think, but I was slighly dissapointed, the whole thing was subtitled so that was always a distraction. the live action stuff looked weird most of the time because either the unfocused parts were distracting or it looked like a composition of images at different planes in the z axix, but cgi stuff looked great.

If you are down for another go I would try it at IMAX or RealD before it leaves theaters. From all the reports I have read those two are the best. Where do you live if it was all subtitled?

IMAX 3D Avatar did the trick for me, I came quite a few times, acting could have been better at parts, it got a little cheesy but I think it did its job very well, no complaints really. Pretty much was exactly what I expected and hoped for. Might see in 3D again before it leaves theaters.

yeah maybe i'll try imax. i live in mexico.

Well I can sleep soundly knowing you enjoyed your time and didn't waste your money :P

Seriously though, glad you liked it. I still need to see it in IMAX. Saving that for my last viewing.

I can understand finding the story/acting poor, but you got to hand it to Cameron for sticking his neck out there for something like this. If only Hollywood had more gents like him.

like all movies I see except for ones that I generally hate I just did my best to enjoy the experience as a child would without trying to find problems constantly like all of new millennium over opinionated kids on the intawebs. I have small list of things that jumped out that I didnt enjoy.

The excessive score:the soundtrack got a bit overly cheesy at points where I knew I would be way more immersed in the scene without it.(I really wish I could just turn off the score entirely some movies)((why the fuck dont more directors understand that minimalism in the soundtrack can make scene more powerful not that opposite sometimes)

The motion capturing(specifically the mouth):there were a few times where the mouth movements completely pulled me out of an otherwise photo realistic believable visual performance. Most of the time that happened with Sigourney Weavers Navi avatar, in general I never thought her digital character looked nearly as good as the others. I can think of a few scenes in specific where her avatar smiled or something where I know they could have slightly modified the animation.

I know I had one other strong constructive criticism but cant recall. The other stuff I could say I would liked more (besides the acting at points) if they were changed were kind of understandable purposes for making the movie more acceptable to a dynamic audience so I cant really complain.
