spoiler tags for plot line related shit, mother fuckers!

Thanks for the heads up - I've added spoiler tags.

I played Star Fox Adventures instead, didn't notice the difference.

I saw the 3d version last night.

This movie is visually stunning. there were plenty of times (like some of flying scenes and the night scenes) where I was absolutely blown away. This movie is worth seeing in theatre and in 3d just to see the world of pandora.

It was otherwise very boring however. The main character (jake sully) was pretty good but everybody else was pretty thinly written and under-developed. Nobody was awful (except maybe the other scientist guy), but they weren't given much to work with. The plot was too fucking obvious and the script was GOD AWFUL-especially in the latter half. my brother and I were trying to stifle laughs the lines were so bad. I won't spoil them though.

anyway, the moral of the story was blatant throughout: exploitation of people and nature for resources is bad... but then at the end it seems like it may not matter what you do to nature because it will always maintain an equilibrium.

anyway I'd give it about a 7/10. worth seeing in 3d.

i'm baffled at the good reviews this is getting. in my eyes it's as bad as the phantom menace. just cringe worthy bad writing. what a bizarre mainstream film though. i guess he was trying to make john carter of mars, which is fine, but did it have to be so unbelievably boring and hacky?

looked great though, lol

i'm excited because i saw it last night and visuals were extremely poor. I'll review this tomorrow but i probably won't watch it til it's out on dvd. 9/10

:wtf: I AM SO CONFUSED BY THIS POST

i honestly found nothing in this movie to be more cringe worthy dialogue than James Cameron's previous films. this was no where near as bad as phantom menace.

at first i was skeptical of the praise it was getting but the positive reviews seem pretty warranted to me.

i mean, for sure, every james cameron movie has bad dialogue. but this was just the most cliche ridden script ever. i don't think there was one original piece of dialogue or story in the entire thing. visually, sure, it was great. i couldn't find anything wrong with how it looked. but near the end, i just wanted the bad guy (i don't remember his name, but he was The Bad Guy in the most superficial way possible) to kick navi ass and kill everything. there wasn't one interesting character in the entire movie, and even as a pulpy ode to edgar rice burroughs fantasy, there wasn't anything memorable outside of some visuals. in the end i guess it was just a batfuck insane fetishistic spectacle, but i swear people are only defending this movie because it's james cameron. if anyone else had made it they would have torn it apart.

i still recommend seeing it in 3d imax though. worth the money for the experience, but it's a guilty pleasure facepalm trashy movie that grew really tiring in the last hour.

edit edit: and when i say as bad as the phantom menace, i mean more the feeling in the air as i left the theater was people seemed dazed and there was this unspoken "that kind of sucked didn't it?" going around, at least in the group i saw it with. which is exactly what happened after phantom menace.

i don't think this is true, you have to take a step back and realize that some people don't give a shit if it's an original story or not. take the original Star Wars for example, riddled with cliches, visually impressive but barely an original premise or story thread in the entire script.

ok, but the original star wars isn't something you can compare this to. i know everyone is, but they just aren't the same thing. that movie had moments of real beauty, it had a memorable score, memorable characters, and ultimately a memorable storyline. it was all archetypes, and it was very black and white, but it worked as a mythical piece of story. this didn't, at all. it was just adolescent fantasy and about an hour longer than it needed to be.

fucking amazing. predictable plot and script, sure. imax 3d was like being in a weird dream, it absolutely blew me away. want to go see this again as soon as possible so i can return to my trip. jake sully slipped up on his american accent a few times. looked up the guy and sure enough he's australian. that was the only thing that took me out of my otherwise totally immersed brain. that and the little faggot hipster next to me and his faggot girlfriend laughing at bad lines the whole time. i was going to tell them to shut up but then i realized the dude had been dealt a bad hand in life with his little faggotty high pitched voice so i let it slide.

worst line (and maybe greatest line):

it was so surreal though. it doesnt hurt that the sound in the imax theatre is absolutely pristine either. one of the best movie experiences i've ever had. so memorable. it is like they hook you directly up and burn the movie into your memory, someone said it earlier in this thread in better words than i can say it but yeah it's like remembered as a memory or something.

loved it.

(wife thought it was better than aliens but not as good as titanic)

Ok, here's the real question for you hard-core film freaks:

Any of you that love Tarkovski's Stalker or Nostalgia and have seen Avatar, could you say Avatar has ANYTHING at all against those two masterpieces? Aesthetically I mean. This I really want to know.

www.petergaber.com is where I keep my paintings. I used to have a kinky tumblr, but it exploded.

can we talk about how james cameron is one of the first people to do a large scale alien planet environment correctly? George Lucas needs to learn some lessons from this movie. I think the scale and detail of the planet was equally as impressive as the 3d

lol please please don't start comparing this to tarkovsky. holy shit. i feel like i'm going insane. it has everything in common with john carter of mars and pulpy trash sci fi from the early part of the twentieth century.

yeah the planet building was impressive as hell. i could have done without flying dragons but that's an iconic thing to stick in there. it looked like a yes album cover, as someone else has already said. i think avatar might be the best bad movie ever made. we can probably agree on that? or did you guys actually think this was a thought provoking experience?

Edited by zaphod

that's funny you mention that because i felt the same way walking out of the theatre. that disorienting effect when you wake up the day after an acid trip .

by far the most psychedelic movie experience i've had.

edit: i felt saddened when i realized i had to come back to the real mundane world after the credits came on, it's been quite a long time since a movie effected me that way

I'm sorry, I got carried away. The question was kind of a statement and you made it great for me when you said that Avatar was the best BAD movie lol

re: how 3d affects people's brains

Some have been saying that the brain gets extra stimulation from the 3D effects:

  Quote
Dr. Mario Mendez, a behavioural neurologist at the University of California, said it is entirely possible Cameron’s 3D technology could tap brain systems that are undisturbed by conventional 2D movies. An inner global-positioning system that orients a person to the surrounding world, was one example he gave.

“Three-D demonstrably creates a space that triggers this GPS; it’s really very stimulating”.

Cameron himself told Time Magazine that 3D viewing “is so close to a real experience that it actually triggers memory creation in a way that 2D viewing doesn’t.” Cameron also believes that stereoscopic (3D) viewing uses more neurons, which would further heighten the impact of 3D.

agree 100%

well i dont know if saddened was the right world. i just felt whimsical, like i was a child again, like new doors in my imagination have been opened up. i remember staring at some of the navi and just being baffled the same way i would stare at people while on acid... they looked... thin? no they look right. it's like, what the fuck do they look like? i dont know man, it's so fucking weird and real. what is going on. acid!!!
