funny how just relaxing and listening to music is never slammed. that's really inactive. and then playing video games, which requires slightly more activity and thinking, is evil

I read a study just last week that reading books - which is pretty much the most withdrawn and introvert thing you can do - is actually highly healthy for your brain and emotional wellbeing.

The internet is like a book that talks back to you and posts funny pictures of kittens. How can that be bad for you?

Especially considering access to kittens has been medically proven to reduce stress and aid mental wellbeing!

I think it's more that depressed people are drawn to the internet rather than the other way around. If someone ended up getting depression AFTER starting to become an internet addict, it can most likely be explained that they were predisposed to depression, or even beginning the path to depression.

If anything, the internet cheers me up. It gives you a place to go when you're bored or lonely, but it still involves a ton of social interaction. I think social interaction has an unbelievably strong effect on one's mood and mental well-being, and I don't think the effect would diminish significantly in the context of text interaction versus real life interaction.

That being said, I'm sure the internet sucks depressed people in and won't let them leave, much in the same way drugs can suck depressed people in. Moderation, for sure, but I still think depressed people would be better off being able to post on forums and whatnot rather than just be a shut-in at home and have NO interaction with others.

i can't agree with you there. i would say interaction through text is better than nothing, for sure, but i much prefer talking to someone in person where you can hear their voice and see their face. looking into someones eyes can substitute for an entire conversation and it makes the situation funnier or more satisfying at the same time.
