Guest sirch
when 'the black dog' announced a new line up and said it was going to be releasing new material, i was really excited and would also get a bit excited each time a new release was announced; hoping and waiting and expecting. but i have to say i've been quite dissapointed by each and every release since then. they seem to me to be only half what they could be, the releases i mean. i start listening and thinking, ok, so this ok... quite good actually, yeah that was good, so when is it going to start getting much better, like i expect it should from the black dog. but sadly it never does, and then it's finished! so you listen again, trying to like it and get into it a bit more each time... but it just doesn't do it for me, compared to past black dog releases, and i don't just mean the ed and andy black dog days... 'unsavoury products' was great, imo. and the various singles and remixes around and before that time, aswell. but Silenced, Radio Scarecrow, and Vexations.. i felt could and should have been a lot better. there are some great moments on all of these albums, but that's all they are. moments that hark back to older magic moments. whereas previous black dog albums and ep's have been thoroughly excellent the entire time, mostly. Guest Apeofnaples
I'm not a big fan of Silenced but Radio Scarecrow and Vexations really grew on me. I think they work much better on speakers as oppose to headphones if that makes any sense... I got Bytes when it first came out and it rocked my world, ditto with Spanners but I do like what they are getting up to these days. Candiru
Black Dog then - Ken Downey plus Plaid. Black Dog now - Ken Downey plus Dust Brothers. I don't try to compare them. Radio Scarecrow is a perfect album and it gives off the coolest mood. Guest sirch
i actually like silenced more as an 'album' than i do the other 2. there are bits of RS that are really really good, but then it quickly gets dull again, which is a shame. when it ends i always think, fuck, was that it? same with FV. though as an album i think FV works better. but i prefer certain tracks on RS. :) at the end of the day it has to be said, that nobody can do "that black dog sound", like ed and andy can... so i won't be expecting much from the new album even though it does LOOK interesting as always. but i hope i'm wrong and it's brilliant............ KGW
I think I prefer Radio Scarecrow over Silenced & Further Vexations. "Train By The Autobahn Part II" is amazing. They are performing the new album in an art gallery on a Tuesday but I have no one to go with! Much of the raw material of the album was made in airports over the last three years. While on tour, the Black Dog made 200 hours of field recordings, much of which was processed and combined with new music in the airport itself, waiting for the next flight. This vast amount of content has been slowly distilled into a set of particularly evocative pieces of music. Composed in large degree of drones there is little in the way of beats until half way through - but rhythm is plentiful within the buzzing synthetic warmth. This record is not necessarily a comfortable listen. But it captures the spectrum of emotions stirred by airports. There is tension and disappointment. But there is also romance and excitement. All this on this record." Guest Greg Reason
Personally, I prefer modern Black Dog to first era Black Dog. Further Vexations blew me the fuck away. Radio Scarecrow is great but the darker the better as far as I'm concerned and they seem to be headed even further down that path with this one. I pre-ordered it straight away cause I want one of those EPs!! And also I'd hate to miss out on the vinyl version, they always do really small prints.
