casino vs japan, plaid, tycho and boards i wouldn't consider IDM at all honestly. They just make pretty music with beats underneath. Autechre to me encapsulates what imo IDM should be all about, pushing the envelope, breaking new ground in electronic music, etc. If these aspects of music don't interest you at all i could understand why you wouldn't like Autechre. Although they have a handful of albums that are pretty easy listening imo like Incunabula, Amber and Oversteps

Remember that (as with most brilliant artists) pretty much all of their releases are very different from one another. Oversteps in particular is a vastly different affair to their recent catalog. Judging by your tastes maybe you'd like something like Chiastic Slide (or even Oversteps, for that matter) better than Quaristice, Untilted, Draft 7.30 and Confield, which are all pretty icy a lot of the time. I love them to bits and pretty much consider them the apex of electronic music but someone like yourself that is into more melodic, chilled sort of electronica would probably find them a bit much to chew on.

yeah I tried listening to a couple of those albums you mentioned (confield, draft 7.30, untitled) and it was a bit too much for me lol.. and you're right, I am more into more melodic electronic music such as Boc/plaid - so I'll give Oversteps and Chiastic Slide a whirl

i think chiastic slide is one of their more difficult albums, you may find Tri Repeate ++ more palatable

So what was the point of this thread then?

Hmm.... I guess.... Maybe I'm just used to it. It's melodic though! Tri Rep is well crunchy (does have some lush stuff too, Eutow and Overand are fucking sublime)

Makes perfect sense to me...they may all get classified as IDM but the first set is more accessible, melodic, pretty, and Autechre is difficult, abstract, and abrasive. Some like both ends of the spectrum, but it's not odd to like one and not the other.

Listen to the EPs. It's always different strokes for different folks when it comes to the Ae albums. Just try and get your hands on all of it and just flick through all of it and stop and listen to a track if you find it interesting. I got in to their discography in a completely fragmented way and, to be honest, it doesn't really matter at all. If you like the above artists then there will definitely be some autechre tracks you'll like. If you like Selected Ambient, then there'll be a bunch of tracks that'll be right down your alley. If you like BOC, then there'll be tracks that are similar in tone to Chinook and June 9th, as well as tracks that'll have the surreal vibe of You Could Feel the Sky and Smokes Quantity. Just mill through their material and give as much of it a bash as you can......seriously, Autechre are in a field of their own, it's worth it.

Incidentally, this is really good> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw1WZMZ9lT0

at first i was gonna get all internet angry at this, as i love chiastic slide. then i thought about it for a moment and realized it was one of the last ones i picked up (i always thought it was half assed, then heard tewe again and fell in love). tri repeate was my introduction to autechre (and the first album of theirs i bought) -- a great introduction. i think dael, the first ae track i ever heard, is still my favorite on that album.

hm.. autechre is harder to get into but i certainly don't find it any less fun than anything else. takes a few listens sometimes, but if you latch onto it, you'll be headbanging to the beats like nothing else

lp5 was when it 'clicked' for me. it's melodic but also has the crazy sci-fi sonic palette of later stuff
