Save State bending

Recommended Posts

i know this was mcbpete's idea, but what do you think of putting together a compilation of us all doing this? i can host it on the rlr site as a free release. obviously there should be a little writeup about who came up with this idea, etc. I just sent you a PM mcbpete

edit: love the shadow of the beast one

it seems like some games have a considerably higher chance of going into another game. ive been having a lot of luck with echo jr.

I'd totally be down to contribute anything I get for a compilation, if what I get is good enough. this one doesnt have any harsh noise although one of the synths is really really big.

echo jr lvl 3 into aliensoldier_002.mp3Fetching info...

this is really fucking interesting

because things didn't have paged memory back then, because the operating system wasn't multitasking or didn't have a strictly defined API - because it didn't have to! - what you are hearing here is, i think, the audio engine of the game thrashing through a mixed bag of code and samples. every time you hear a repetitive thing, that's a loop. everytime you hear static, that's a decision or a quick probe through an array or something like that. and when it hits sample memory or graphics memory you hear other things.

now that being said i have no way of explaining some of the noises in this... it's phantasy star 4 with a zero wing (of ALL YOUR BASE fame) savestate loaded

holy crap wait til you hear this barney's hide and seek vs new zealand story vs zero wing... someone phone raster-noton, is all i can say.

(i figured out that under certain conditions you can overlay save states and retain elements of the prior one).

i am basically waiting for it to stop now. but i actually don't think it's going to.

i think it would be cool to put these up unedited, i mean shortening them is a good idea if some of them are really long but i think most of them sound awesome as is

yeah kaini I've noticed something like that, I opened dynamite heady and loaded a save state of the street fighter two capcom logo, which just freezes on a note. now normally, when I open an echo jr save in dynamite headdy, it just sort of clicks and then goes right back to dynamite heady. but if I do the street fighter thing first, it goes crazy on the tunes, AND it produces some amazing glitches out visuals. gonna try and get a video recorded here.

this is raw to the extent that i am loading various states into memory as the mood takes me

so i don't really know what anything is from

zero wing and batman are interesting cases so far...

zero wing crashes and replaces everything with

http://humphreyplugg.kaen.org/music/AHP_-_pstar4zerowing.mp3 no matter what save state you load

if you load a batman save state it replaces everything with batman

the effects with barney and phantasy star are pretty variable

recommend me awesome megadrive music!

what's really great is the games with sound tests in the options. i was able to save a state on each song in we're back, a dinosaur's tale and get different results for each, without having to actually play the game and get to the levels.

various were back lvls into dynamite.mp3Fetching info...

Guest Bramsworth

I used to do this a lot when I discovered it a few years back. I never even thought to share it with people, now I wish I had :P

I remember discovering something like this many years ago with Earthworm Jim. This was on the real console before I even knew what emulators were, or even had a PC. If you activate an invincibility code and then find an enemy and just try to keep yourself jumping within the enemy's sprite, the audio for Jim when he gets hurt will keep playing over and over, it's insane. Eventually the audio just screws up and starts producing pretty much the same effect you get with this savestate trick. I remember I got some pretty funky tunes, including something that literally sounded like a whole tune from Toejam and Earl, if anyone remembers that game.

I'm gonna experiment with this a bit myself now. :) If you also want to try another experiment, disable the Z80 channel. Everything slows down to a crawl :P

hmmm so this is strange, when you load sonic 2 into revenge of shinobi, it actually recreates the music. I've had a few that just would play the music normal, but the music here is actually being remixed slightly. strange.

holy chriast!

surprisingly that's the one needed the least manipulation - just load a game of zero wave, start the game, and then load a state from phantasy star 4. it's easy to reproduce, but it's fucking mental.

sounds a bit like a much better version of huge chrome cylinder box unfolding
