So, there's been a whole bunch of "what should I listen to first from ____"

So in this thread, take the time and mention the first best tracks of any artist/genre/label/movement that you feel you're an expert on.

Simple example:

New to IDM? Try out:

Boards of Canada - Geogaddi

Aphex Twin - RDJ album

Mu-ziq - Lunatic Harness

etc.

Ha, you're funny Mesh. ehhhh....

I like this thread a lot...

Too much music in my brain right now...

for IDM, I did start with the RDJ album, Homogenic by Bjork and Music Has The Right To Children by Boards of Canada but what blew it up for me was the WARP 10 + 3 compilation....

then came Isan's Salamander, Squarepusher's Big Loada, µZiq's Lunatic Harness, Plaid's Rest Proof Clockwork and reading Grooves Magazine....

what got me ready for these amazing records was the band Tortoise....

and listening to a lot of Miles Davis' electric period: Bitches Brew, Live Evil, Get Up With It, and On The Corner

now I listen to so much music, it is hard for me to know what to suggest other than what I have already named.........

Every single one of these was in heavy rotation at some point during my teenhood.

kraftwerk -> public enemy -> aphex twin... all 3 influenced the expansion of my musical tastes. most other idm artists were pretty easy to digest since i have those 3 that have enhanced my music listening abilities. and of course, ae have been my faves for the past 10+ years.

How in the world could you leave out Metallica "Kill Em All", Motorhead "Ace of Spades" and Kreator "Terrible Certainty"

But yeah, good list otherwise. I'd also throw Anthrax "Among the Living" into the adventurous category.

Discovering amazing new music for yourself is far more satisfying than it being handed to you on a plate. You need to have a curious mind and explore with an open mind, figuring out on your own what music you love gives you a sense of ownership over it.

remember people, this is a beginner's guide and not a 'music you should just listen to' suggestion thread....

and Brandi, Brandi, Brandi....

a lot of that stuff is not prog rock rock like Opeth(prog metal), GY!BE(themeatic post rock), Boris (some prog but they are all over the place, metal, sludge metal, drone metal), and Electric Wizard!!!!? They are one of my favourite sludge/stoner metal bands but they are not prog rock, at all....

If you want to start off with prog rock, I started with Yes, and would suggest the same....

all of 1970's Yes is some of the best prog out there...

Yes - Fragile is one of the best records of all time!

Problem with prog rock is that it's all over the place. Bands like Yes are more easy to classify. I'm not much of a prog rock fan, but those are what I would use as being good start points from my own personal taste. I wouldn't label any of them as prog rock, but they have enough prog elements in them to be able to fit in there someway. Also I was just mentioning a few things stating that Modey I'm sure knows the more appropriate things to recommend.

I mean, Rock--> So many thing can fit under that label. You could prolly even classify some Psy trance under it. So...meh. I'm not good at labeling things, b/c I do my best to avoid it usually, etc, etc, bunnies. :emotawesomepm9:

Indeed, 'pink' bunnies....

look at me, all mister categorization....

I agree that it stinks but when speaking on message boards or with people who don't know what kind of music you are speaking about, seems the only way to get across a mutual understanding....

When I first discovered IDM, I found Aphex Twin and immediately listened to Selected Ambient Works II. Bad move, at that time I simply couldn't appreciate his talent.
