Eh? You're having a laugh mate, there's shit going on all the time, just that times have changed and the names are different perhaps? V confusing post!

there's shit going on all the time in Northhampton!!??

where are these regular IDM/electronica nights happening that i don't know about??

seriously. i'd like to know cos it, used to at least, seem like there wasn't much going on like that anymore........ anywhere ????

yeah you'd get the odd night here 'n there... but not regular weekly/monthly nights/gigs ??

or maybe i just haven't been looking hard enough for a while.

Hahaha, well perhaps not in Northampton. I'm used to travelling places. Check Centrifuge shit, Bangface still going strong, plenty of nights at Corsica happening, I Love Acid is always looking good, plus regular good things at Plastic People (even though it's on a break now), just had Floating Points and Kyle Hall there... and there's always DMZ at Mass and nights at Plan B... Big Chill house puts the odd good thing on too, Vibert is there soon and Addison Groove (Headhunter) over a weekend. Also Fabric lineups are picking up a bit, there's Egyptian Lover, Ed DMX and Space Dimension Controller in the main room for a Bloc (I think) thing... not all of that is really IDM/electronica, but that's a kind of a horrible tag and a buzzword from ten years ago anyway... if you don't get off your arse and check out the new stuff then chances are you might be really missing out on something really cool!

This weekend in London there's this

plus the Bangface boat party, plus the Fact magazine/Night Slugs party that has an AWESOME lineup, and there's a night at Corsica Fri too I think... all that's off the top of my head alone and I prob won't even end up at any of it as I'm trying to save money! Even where I live the odd interesting thing pops up every now and then, there's a bloke who dresses up as a wizard with some Electribes and cheap keyboards, I bring my gear out once in a while, and my mates run a dub soundsystem and have some cool stuff guesting on that every now and then

wow. well yeah i guess if you think about the UK as a whole then there's obviously stuff happening all the time. not all of it decent tho!

and not all IDM/electronica nights, like you say, and which was what i was getting at more than just 'electronic music' nights in general.

where i live there used to be 'IDM' nights and Skam/Warp artists and associated artists playing/DJ'ing every weekend. but you just don't get that as much anymore. not even in London i would assume. at least not every week. festivals and summer stuff is always good tho, yeah. but that's once a year! and an Ae tour (for example) is every 2 years... y'know. that's more what i was getting at. not the 100's of average dubstep/techno/house nights all over the country. but each to their own. if you like it, cool. man i couldn't even afford to go out every weekend anymore anyway lol

Yea. Sounds like a funny thing to do once in a while. In the place i live, it's impossible even to imagine that. The cult of Electronic music is totally non existent. Only pop shit everywhere.

Yeah know what you mean about money mate, I haven't been to London hardly at all this year so far, was going every month last year, not sure what's happened! I think the whole WarpSkam etc thing is still a going interest but electronic music moves so fast, I think the typical IDM sound just got replaced with other stuff, and even Warp and Mu distanced themselves from it... I think it's always fun to mix it up anyway and pick the highlights of each scene! What do you reckon to Flying Lotus? He just had a new album out so hoping for more dates from him, he's GREAT live.

Down my local last Sunday was a great laugh, me and my housemate DJed in the pub garden, wizard bloke bought his gear out in the packed front bar, then some blokes from a local band DJed loads of Diplo style stuff, got pissed and MCed in terrible/comedic ways... that place is a rare gem though in a veritable shithole!

yeah definitely still has big interest and a big following. when i said it's all had its day, before, that was a bit of an exaggeration, lol..

sorry. hope i didn't offend. and your soundsystem sounds cool. you should do a mini pub tour and come down to Brighton :)

as an aside, i remember the Nesh nights Warp used to put on every month.. now they were class! dirty old club (in a good way). no security. i walked in with a bag full of beer one time.... lol (almost unheard of) guys on the door didn't bat an eyelid or even attempt to search me.

now THOSE are the kinda nights i like/miss, and there should be more of. no hassle, quality rave ups! lol. where it doesn't cost you an arm and leg to get to and then to get in, and you don't get searched like a potential dealer and/or have bottles of plain fucking evian water (unopened) taken off you before you're aloud in!!!! fuck that. - and those sorta nights need to happen in EVERY town and city in the UK EVERY weekend!! :D

not just London and the biggies, etc. cos for some it's just too much of a pain to get to and from. it's just not worth the cost and hassle (as you get older).

but electronic music moves so fast,

i don't think it really moves or has moved that fast at all. it moves fast in that so much so-called 'new' stuff is released so often, but that doesn't mean it's all good or worth following or going to see/hear live!! people are still talking about Aphex albums from 10-20 years ago on here ffs like they came out last week!! if anybody of later generations had really done anything that was so much better then so many people wouldn't still be banging on about him, or Black Dog Productions and IDM in the 90's, and BoC and Ae, lol. everything would have moved on otherwise. but it hasn't at all, because nobody has really moved it on yet properly, imho.

sure, hundreds of people release and make electronic music every single day, but most of it is average and pretty boring, imho. just because releases are being fired out left right and center, and all the kids have the means to knock out an album a week on their PC's, doesn't mean it's all good, forward thinking new music.

there's little in the way of electronica in Naaarch

I was talking to a guy at the Arts Centre who had a hand in organising the Plaid show and Spectro looks like being a semi-regular thing. I thought it was a decent turnout on Friday and it'd be nice if it could be some kind of springboard to get a bit more variety in the live scene here. Ace little venue as well. Norwich doesn't do too bad for bands I suppose, just needs more for the electronic geeks.

Yeah, over the last few years there've been sporadic attempts to get electronica nights going. Spectra is the latest attempt (I missed the Kelpe gig)

The guys at Slow Magazine promoted a few nights, as did logarhythm.org.uk (now sonamu.net by the looks of it): Mira Calix and Chris Clark at Cafe Da for example, and there was a short-lived series of nights in Bedfords' crypt iirc.

I think the problem is the overall small market for much more than a monthly event. There's no way I'd get any of my mates along even on a monthly basis though - they'll all very MOR musically or the more adventurous have moved away from the area...

The Arts Centre is the best venue by far & have had a few decent bands on in the last year or two:

Project D.A.R.K., Blissbody & Pram did an experimental night with weird home-made instruments: The Photophonic Experiment

short clip

Ulrich Schnauss, as part of Sonic Cathedral (awful sound though), & múm more recently.

It all leaves more cash to buy sounds I suppose!

I remember hearing about all these nights that I missed, I must be a bit of a fucktard to have managed that. Going to be a bit more conscientious from now on.
