Well, there are organ samples in Melodies From Mars & Logan Rock Witch. I'm guessing at some point he managed to sneak into a church & make some samples with their pipe organ, sort of like how he just recorded a whole ton of generic violin/cello samples & found ways to put them in tracks afterward.

I'm going to give you a coming-out party, at your house. It's perfect. You can't refuse. It's my gift to you. It's your fantasy.

Fantasia, having a party is not my idea of a fantasy, especially right now.

The party isn't the fantasy! I know what you'd like. It's the fantasy you once told me about. Remember?

I don't remember telling you about it. What is it? What's the fantasy?

Come on you slags!

Donkey Rhubarb, like [lichen], is interesting for its ambiguity. I mean, some people really love that track, because it sounds so uplifting and happy and gay. Yet others dislike it, because to them, it sounds irritating and annoying. Like, totally gay, you know?

I just find it interesting. Personally, I like it.

i just read the thread. There is so much greatness here. i love WATMM.

The Metroid Prime soundtrack totally made me wet for aphex... I got into him around the same time.

Next Heap With is a phenomenal closer that for some reason reminded me of lurking around the giant mysterious church levels of Thief II. Even on its own though, no imagery required, man what a track.

I think you could split ICBYD into halves. One's abrasive, the other is mellow. You have Ventolin, Slags, and Start as you Mean To Go On on the abrasive half, and Mookid, Alberto, Waxen Pith, Acrid Avid and maybe even Next Heap With on the mellow side.

BTW, this was the first aphex purchase I made, after seeing the name appear as a talking point in many music reviews of stuff I was listening to at the time, though none of it was as IDM as him. I think I bought it when I was 15, and really fucking soaked it up on its own before I ever listened to any other AFX. So ICBYD is probably the most special aphex album to me... it's like an old friend who knows me better than most people. I spent so many nights absorbing it as a teenager.

In other news, I love ranting in Fast Reply on WATMM because it feels liberating.

Next Heap With - Probably the best outro for an RDJ album since SAW85-92, and I don't think any albums have put up a good outro fight since this. Soooo perfect, the strings just ride and stretch your ears out. He really could have been a great classical composer with tracks like this and Icct Hedral. The horns do get a bit distorted at times, but I like the small distortions and inconsistencies in Richard's music, makes it very human. I used to play this like 8 or 9 times in a row, easy, it's just that great. An amazing way to end a legendary album.

this is a very robust tune

Slags is probably top 3 in my book

Too true mate, Come on You Slags is one of my favourite Aphex Twin tracks aswell. I always don a lesbian porn star voice and sing along whilst having delightful spasms to the beats & laserz n tings ^^

foods in the tone of 'go to the fuckin store'

patayda chips

apple cracker thangies

carrots in brown paper bag

I bought all these albums the day they were released. The feeling of the package and the ideas behind the amazing music was also a treat. Back then. None of this downloading the whole discography shit. I had to wait. I luv this music. Made my youth a special place

yeah i bought pretty much all of my aphex twin and autechre stuff at a time when i didn't have fast internet, or a steady income. having to save up for upcoming/existing idm albums was torturous but very rewarding!

and actually believing that 'homemade gear' in the pictures was real and he really did drive a tank. All the interviews he was bullshitting through we ate it up and it made it even more mysterious and special.

Donkey Rhubarb has this nice synth string shit ducking in and out of it later on in the track. It's like one of those aphex things where I end up thinking he produced more songs on an obscure compilation that I never end up finding because it was an obvious track like this and I do not associate those strings with Donkey Rhubarb at all
