John Zorn's Filmworks, all of them.

seconded. i just got done listening to 'in the mirror of maya deren.' there are lots of gems in this series.

and maybe they haven't been brought up because they're too obvious, but just in case you're not familiar with them, nino rota and ennio morricone are probably the two most acclaimed film scorers ever; they were responsible for most of the great music you hear in fellini's work and 1960s spaghetti westerns, respectively. they did all kids of great work outside of those spheres as well.

if it wasn't for that theme i don't know if i would have gotten as hooked on the Conversation as i did, probably my favorite score in any of his films

just saw this again tonight, i love this track, one of Carter Burwell's best

I couldn't agree more!

His soundtrack for In Bruges is absolutely beautiful as well

My favorite piece from In Bruges - plus, it sounds a lot like some of the different themes from A Serious Man

his best work, imo

most likely. although theres some tracks on the big trouble soundtrack that are quite epic.

theres something about carpenter soundtracks that are just perfect.. theyre so simple yet so identifiable

whoever posted the yoda theme and the et main theme earlier...

bang on... actually the entire empire strikes back soundtrack is fucking stunning. you have to get the original though, there's a few different versions, and despite having the same instrumentation and arrangements, some of them don't quite feel right.

also, over the moon from the et soundtrack is by far the best piece of music of the entire score

(and you've got to love the litte recapitulation of the yoda theme when et is out trick or treating and walks past someone dressed as yoda.) (

john williams is a thematic genius.

i've been appreciating the Inland Empire score lately, but i'm still pissed the Rabbits theme is so goddam short minus the awesome scary train whistle in the background (i guess that counts as sfx not score)

It's totally ripping on Angelo Badalamenti but i don't think he had any involvement, all the good tracks are credited to Lynch himself

anyways check these out

  • 2 weeks later...

Phew! I can't believe I got to the 5th marker before somebody mentioned John Carpenter!

Though not some oracle on soundtracks I would say

Natural Born Killers

The Beach (poppy but with 2 classic tunes by Faithless and Orbital, the other tracks are good barbeque music if you know what I mean)

Ry Cooders theme for Southern Comfort and one of my favorite stoner tunes of all time.

Fucking Hell! Hahah I been sitting here for a few minutes knowing something else would crop up Judgement Night. Some great tracks on that little beauty.

And The Wickerman ost!

Not seen Southern Comfort in years, but I do remember the soundtrack being great. And how could anyone omit The Wicker Man (like I did)?
