Guest Aces
Not sure if it counts as a score or a soundtrack but one of my all time faves is Suspiria by Goblin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJUaCAIxSk4 Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/56153-film-scores/page/4/#findComment-1334801 Share on other sites

Guest all_purpose_sandpaper
Synecdoche NY was the last soundtrack to really get on top of me. The editing had so much to do with it though. Carlos' TRON was certainly an original and perfect for the tone of the film. Really strange changes in that OST I have not stumbled over even in classical music. I picked up a copy years ago but never truly got into it. giving it another listen now and liking it. Magic Landings is fairly off it's head, sounds like Altered States got into a fight with Looney Tunes. I love Carlos, Sonic Seasonings get's plenty of rotation here. I'm looking forward to Daft Punk's score for the new Tron though, seems like an interesting fit and I'd say it'll be a good collaborative effort between them and the filmmaker. I admit I have not heard the new Tron soundtrack altogether, but it appears from snippets deprived of all the fluid wondrous weirdness of the original. Guest jim
I dislike most film music immensely. Always liked Claude Chabrol's soundtracks though, think they were written by his brother. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdVnHgk4914&feature=related (good film by the way, worth a watch) Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/56153-film-scores/page/4/#findComment-1439432 Share on other sites

Well the composers are mostly hacks, that's just the unfortunate truth; these things are political. Also most films are targeted for mass consumption, a composer can't really be too interesting in this situation, they're just performing the function of underlining the visual element and they're usually required to write in a certain style dictated by the director. Also the incidental nature of film scoring means that development of material over time becomes difficult/ impossible. Kubrick's use of pre-existing pieces I find much more interesting, and he often lets the music take the front seat, think of the obelisk scene in 2001 with Ligeti's Lux Aeterna- amazingly effective because the director fit the film around the music. Guest Billov
Ghost Dog and Office Space soundtracks for some seriously gangsta rap Donnie Darko for some meloncholy 80's stuff (Tears for Fears, Echo and the Bunnymen etc) as for original scores, I agree with a lot of these... plus A Scanner Darkly Lost Highway The Elephant Man (first and best use of adagio for strings... one of the most tearjerking moments in cinema) Lynch's soundtracks and sound design is always top notch. Herzog too (Nosferatu, Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, Bad Lieutenant) Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/56153-film-scores/page/4/#findComment-1439881 Share on other sites
