This popped up on my rss feed last night... Someone made an max4live interface for the g1 modular. This guy is pretty well known and respected on the m4l user group, so I will assume this is pretty quality.

Man I really need to break out my Micromodular again. That thing sounds crazy.

It's funny, we could talk all day about technical stuff and specs when comparing Nord vs. Virus, but really what it comes down to is: they sound completely different. I mean, they sound almost the exact opposite of each other, really. It's remarkable how different they sound considering they are "just" digital synths. Especially the two machines I have (Virus B vs. NL2x).

And then throw the Micro/Nord G1 in the mix and you have a 3rd almost completely different very characterful sound. "Like a distorted lego block" as I read at one point.

They do sound different, but I'm not sure what you mean by sound the exact opposite?

I have a hard time verbalizing these type of descriptions... I'm just curious if you could elaborate?

Yeah I'm not sure if I could explain it either.

To me the Virus sounds very dark and controlled while the NL2 sounds almost insanely bright and feels (to me anyway) like a beast to be tamed. I guess that's a pretty typical opinion, really.

My very vague impression of both synths (never having compared them closely in this respect) is that the Virus is more typically "VA" sounding (occasionally steppy or artifact-y) whereas the NL2 is really liquid and smooth (I mean, implementation-wise, not necessarily in terms of the sound).

Another way I've thought about it is to say that there are tons of terrible sounds on the NL2. I mean, it can truly produce frightening amounts of treble, for one thing. And the ranges of the knobs are really really wide—for example the resonance knob gets to what is to my ears a ridiculous amount of resonance and you still have half to a third of a turn left to go if you want more!

There may be something else to be said about the two synth's lineages here? For example I was unaware that the NL was modeled in some ways (the filter anyway) on the P5. Never having used a P5 myself it didn't occur to me, but I can hear it now. The filter whistles as opposed to screams, for example.

The raw stuff on the Virus has less of a personality to me but all the weird shapers and stuff give it the "Virus feel" kind of after the fact.

If you can afford to keep the g1, I would.

You'll find they each have different characters. The g1 is a lot more raw sounding, and if you enjoy it's sound, you might get frustrated trying to reproduce the grit with the cleaner synth engine of the g2.

All Nord (and Waldorf also) models are my favorite synths of all time. Clavia and Waldorf tie for 1st. Korg and Yamaha come in together at 2nd. If you consider yourself a serious, professional, or full time whatever name you want to give yourself, then try a nord modular. Get a micro mod they are dirt cheap right now (bout 350 bucks on ebay). Toy with that and then move up to a g1 or g2. They are some of the most fantastic and deep synths ever created. Any complaints about them being too "cold" or digital can easily be remedied with some programming, or you can route a patch out to whatever outboard you want, and then route it right back in to the same patch and there's your warmth or just put it at the end of the chain. The midi modules make the g2 a step above so many things.

Also, if you've just played with the g2 demo and have never owned any generation/model of the nord modulars, you're missing out on one of the key features and that is the audio processing. Pretty much anything you send through it sounds fantastic coming out the other end.

inputs, on a nord? oh yeah, modular,, ok, want now..

4 in 4 out y0

Yeah when I had my Nord Lead one a good while ago (which I regret selling), it was like the one synth that I always wished had an input on it. Even though the modular was around, there's something I just love about the nord lead's layout that's so quick and intuitive.

made sequencer patch:

SeqEvents on the top are "quantizers". They are reseting 4 LFOs, that trigger drum synth patch at slotB with arbitary frequency (due to RndPattern -> Glide -> LFO's rate)

example

recorded, resampled and amplified

nice! thanks for posting. it's nice to see it spelled out.

interesting what ae had to say about it:

Sean: "It's so lush having that (pointing at the Nord's control surface), you have no idea. Most of the gear that we like to use gives us a good result because it has this sort of interface."

Rob: "I think the the Nord has been the most inspirational piece of gear that we've worked with, it's pushed us to get all our other gear to try and emulate it."

have to agree with that.. no other synth is as flexible, without dropping $10g on a Buchla or somethin. love them!

ok who has the g1 they wanted to sell? i am interested.

I had one about a year ago, g1 keyboard, and sold it for $700. Was that a good deal?

I loved it but it was a pain in the ass because the software did not work well with my sequencer. I loved the sounds/patch building. it was just frustrating in odd ways. i still miss it. now i use reaktor, and i love that too.

For the kb version you probably could have got more, certainly here in the UK. Both G1 and G2 nord modulars are holding their value pretty well.

NM1 prices haVe gone up so much, you're better off (imo) saVing up a lil more and getting a G2, it's well worth it and you get a heck of a lot more options. OR on the other hand, go for the micro and make sure you like it before digging in for a g2.
