Bytes-era pseudonyms

So it's fairly well accepted, from what I gather, that Balil = Ed and Atypic = Andy. But what of the other pseudonyms on bytes and trainer. Discogs says that Andy = Tura, but discogs isn't exactly reliable and says that Close, Up, Over = Ken and I could swear that on the os 9 version of their site Plaid had a free track by Close, Up, Over. So what do we know and on what is that info based?

So discuss. Using words if necessary.

i remember downloading the 4 tracks including the Close Up Over from the old flash site too in around 2000.

'Close Up Over' must be Ed.

by ear and infomation gained..

Ed = Close Up Over; Balil.

Andy = Atypic, Plaid (for Bytes); Tura.

Ken = Xeper, I.A.O; Discoridan Popes.

Andy = Atypic, Plaid (on Bytes it was just him as Plaid, so i hear, but that might be wrong, so just include Ed under Plaid aswell), and Tura

That, to my knowledge, is Thee actual Truth. haha :)

yes, exactly. Discogs has been wrong about Close, Up, Over being Ken. the above is correct from interviews i've read as well, in fact i think i edited Discogs to reflect that. been a long time fan and i still can't find that damn interview where Plaid says this.

maybe their mother's are all really nice and really good cooks? lol

seriously tho i know loads of people who're having to or even choosing to live with their parents still, for loads of different reasons.

and this is 2010 after all. not the 70's or the 80's (thank fuck)!! it's old fashioned nonsense really and pretty ridiculous these days if you still think you should be out the door by 18.. or 21, and fucking married with kids, a house, a mortgage, a shit load of debt and a bad back by the age of 25!

fs how grim a life the older generations must've had. i feel sorry for some of them, it's so grossly narrowminded!

So you still live at home then? ;-)

oh as often as possible! LOL

nah i live in a caravan by the sea, appropriately named "meals on wheels". i'm a Gypsie at heart and i do what i want, lol

always good to go pop in at home for a bit tho. if you have a good home to go to!

my ma is well laid back, she grows her own chronic! lol :D

i know lots of peeps who live at home tho, like i said before, and for serious reasons. like being too poor to move out, recession money problems,

having massive debt after leaving uni and not being able to get a decent job, having ill mothers/fathers that need support and help with things, etc. etc. etc.

one of my mates can't move out cos he has to help pay the bills for his mother and sister to carry on living where they live, otherwise they'd be homeless if he didn't. seriously.

so you see.. that snide comment by whichever old timer from tBd, is just really really ignorant and narrowminded!!

i don't think they really deserve a sub-forum here tbh.

:my 2 cents: :)

All I know is what they dig together was make transcendent music.. What they make apart is kind if alright sometimes but neither plaid nor tbd in the present day moves me like old bdp..

Yeah that's how i feel too, basically. it's as simple as that! and there's no "hate".

the Holocaust was hate. cold blooded murder is hate. if Boredroom and all his mates were standing outside tBd's house

throwing stones through the wondows and shouting abuse at them, THAT would "hate" ! but nobody is doing that.

people really should get things into a proper perspective. at the end of the day it's ONLY an old tape.

it's funny what a lot of silly fuss has been created all over a bit of old fucking plastic! lol

tape went up. tape came down. end of story, really. no harm done. :)

We shouldn't pay too much attention to the Internet and forum blather.. It's not the real world.

Aye, that's very true. this exists only here. in the virtual realm.

and this forum is pretty funny most of the time! :)

so fuck the tape, let's party! :D lol

It's gone, it's passed, it's over. All is well again. Kisses for Ken, Andy, Ed, the Dusts and the other two doggers who everyone forgets about (sadly Ive forgotten their names).

They aren't too much actually. I wonder what they did in music before Ken discovered their asses. I just don't like the way those two talk about the past black dog, like they had something to do with it.

he mentioned "the other 2 doggers who everyone forgets about". they are Ross Knight and Steve Ash.

to my knowledge both of them worked with Ken Downie on the 'Unsavoury Products' album,

which featured the awesome vocal talents of Black Sifichi. - check it out! it's a wicked album. very very dark in places tho.

and, um, Ross Knight and Shugmonkey fell out with Ken around 2003. then the Dusts climbed on board shortly afterwards.. like, 2004-ish.

Shugmonkey is a brilliant illustrator, btw... ftr. :)

Yea, i know that album with Black Sifichi. Very good. Everything Ken puts his hands on comes pretty good always :)

i might aswell tell you a bit more info as we're on the subject of it.. and i know you're interested in this history,

and that's rare, and so should be shared.............. :)

Ross and Shugmonkey were close friends and both were going to work with Ken on a new album after Unsavoury Products.

it was going to be a 'Bytes 2' in fact, from what i recall. but it never happened, because they all fell out and Ross and Shug left.

it was shortly after this that Martin Dust talked to Ken and put forward the idea of them working together.

Martin had been putting on club nights in Sheffield and was about to start up a record label.... Dust Science.

Ken was actually going to quit music entirely at this point in 2003 because of all the trouble he'd had with people and record labels..

til Martin came along and proposed they work together. so, you could say that Martin Dust rescued him, and rescued tBd, in a way.

and so to this day Ken Downie is still making music, which is a really good thing. cos you need people like him around. REEEEAL people! :)

Yeah we really do owe a lot to Martin, and a lot of times he's the grand voice of the Dog. Anyway from what i've read recently Ken and Martin have known each other for a very long time and they used to do the BBSing thing way back in the early internet days. So i'd imagine Martin has been in the picture in some form as long as The Black Dog has existed. There was the old like Black Dog Towers BBS or something like that. he probably had a hand in it.

what is owed to Martin is tBd's recent revival since 2005.

and yeah it should be said, respect is due for that, and for all the hard work he's put in.

and you would, anyone would try their complete best in his position. and your best is all you can do.... ehhhhh

i don't agree that he's "the grand voice of the Dog", tho.. lol. not at all. Kendog Downie is, surely? :)

from what i know Martin didn't have any hand in the creation of the original BBS. he was just a big fan like you and me. :)

there's an interview out there where Dust says he contacted the original tBd through their BBS, like a lot of other fans did aswell....

and that was already running.. in the early 90's.

so, 'lucky break' is what it comes down to i guess (in the nicest possible way), come 2004... 15 odd years later, fan and friend becomes member.

for better or worse. bit of both tho really aint it as always. :)

anyway this thread has gone waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off topic! LOL. class

so since we've veered into a ken downie discussion with some references to early plaid - is my age old assumption that ken is at fault for killing the 3xCD trainer way back when on point? until that stuff (parasight/BDP EP) gets reissued i'm going to hold him responsible unless i find out it was some dope at GPR or something.

What he means is that Martin is often the spokesman for tBd, which is true. Most of the promotion, interviews and posts are by Martin.

How did you come to be involved in The Black Dog?

“I’ve known Ken from the beginning. Before the Internet existed, Ken and I used to run a thing called a bulletin board, where you had a modem in your house and your computer was basically open to people dialling in and sharing stuff, swapping information, uploading and downloading.

“I’ve been in punk bands and making music since I was 12. Richard’s about 10 years younger and I met him when we worked at a company that makes computer games.

“We started talking in 2002 about making music and starting a new label up and getting back to basics really: making stuff ourselves and getting away from record labels. So that’s what we started to do and it’s been a long slow process but it’s been enjoyable.

You can sort of hear how ken sounds a bit more "serious" and less playful than ed and andy. maybe just less overly melodic. his tracks are my favourites on bytes.

oh and lol @ tbd forum drama. I hope ken/martin/richard saw my thread asking for bytes and spanners to be reissued.

every now and again there's some massive drama on there dude. - been observing over the years. it's kinds funny.

noone else in electronic music still has a forum like that, ? which is kinda cool, but also.... kinda stupid.

cos everyone and anyone can sit and watch and read the silly drama, like an episode of Neighbours mate lol ;)

2002 was when Unsavoury Products came out, yeah? Ken was with Ross and Steve at this point, and also Shugmonkey,

til 2003, when they spectacularly all fell out (more forum drama).

before this they were set to do a Bytes 2, or at least a new album together, cos i remember reading on their forum back then.

it wasn't til 2003/2004 that Martin showed up, at least online. i'm sure. so i wouldn't believe interviews as they're full of diss-info.

just follow the forum instead, if you have the time for it. :)
