I don't really care if the masses now have even easier access to auto-tune thanks to R5. For me reason is just a fucking pretty-ass all in one solution with the best midi sequencer (after FL Studio). If only I could use that sequencer within Logic or Ableton to control other VST's.

Also who doesn't like flipping to the back of the rack to watch cables fly around?

I like Reason. Actually, it's pretty much the only thing I ever use, so I wouldn't really be able to compare it to anything else.

But I'm kinda disappointed that this update is largely focused around an updated loop player, and an autotune device. I can't stand the sound of autotune, although I'm sure if I jiggered with Neptune for a bit I could come up with some original sounds. But Octorex doesn't look like it adds anything that couldn't be done fairly easily already. Kong looks okay, but it doesn't seem enough to carry the whole thing by itself.

So yeah. I'm not sold on this, basically. Oh well.

Sounds badass. I'll have to try it out with the new stuff. I've used Reason here and there (had it installed and have been reinstalling for years, used it in my electronic music class in college), but I always thought the piano roll sucked. It's the reason I don't use it. Maybe I missed something.

Either way I've been considering picking it up again and at least controlling it from Renoise if nothing else.

Out of curiousity, what is it that you think makes the Reason piano roll good?

i'm beta testing it. the kong drum designer is cool, but i think the best thing about it is being able to trigger rex files for different locations via the pads. takes a bit of time to setup but it pretty cool i think.

the live sampling is so late that its hardly worth getting excited about considering reason is over ten years old and there are machines that are 20 years old that did that from the start...

haven't tried neptune yet. might do this evening.

could the live sampler thing be set up as a looper?

nah. it basically means you can record and load samples straight into reason without usingany other software. something they really should have implemented when they released version 1 ten years ago. clearly props are too caught up in their own self righteous hue of skeuomorphism that they thought it necessary to introduce a tool thats fundamental to what the program is used for decades after it was invented.

personally i preferred the idea of using reason when i couldn't sample into it. made me think more about sound design and routing ideas which only reason offers at such an intermediate level.

I've been thinking about this some more, and it definitely doesn't seem worth the upgrade. They have a drum machine, that is pretty much a combination of sampling and synthesizing techniques that are already available. There is an expanded loop player, which makes it easier to do something already available. There is sampling, which I could already do because I have record. And they have an auto-tuner, which I'd rather not have anything to do with anyway.

And blocks mode? Blocks mode?

The only thing good about this release is the ability to normalize and reverse audio, but that isn't worth the money.

skeuomorph is a sweet word.

  • 3 months later...

Got the demo of this...Does anyone find the note sequencer really annoying and fiddly? Got so used to Reason 4's, n this one is actually really irratating. Kong is very cool though, lots of creative things you can do with that beast. Not too impressed by the new Dr. Rex Player thing...Kong and Thor together though, so many possibilities...yummy.
