Fuck the haters. It isn't Spain's fault that they came up against teams, as has frequently been pointed out, playing the most ruthlessly negative football they possibly could.

From Switzerland to Paraguay to Germany to, far worst of all, the Dutch...Spain had to contend with one horror show after another and came out on top. I love this World Cup, if nothing else, because the most positive team in the tournament won and deserved it, hands-down.

Germany played negative football?

How so?

Yeah, it's a niggling criticism of their game against Spain, where their counterattacking was just awful and they looked scared and uninspired for most of the 90 minutes. Still, you could hardly call Germany a positive side in the semifinal and even Loew bemoaned their tactics against Spain as too withdrawn.

Eh, it's all heavily subjective and I can clearly tell you wanted NED to win, so that might have something to do with it.

Anybody who talks about officiating in this game would be wise to recall, no matter what may have gone Spain's way in the last 10 minutes, that NED was lucky to have 11 players on the pitch for as long as they did. Period. End of story. De Jong should have seen Dead Red and Van Bommel was the most foultastic, useless sack of excrement on the pitch during this entire tournament. He, too, was lucky to be on the pitch.

there you go ascribing shit to other people. I didn't really have a horse in this race. I'm happy for Spain.

Vam Bommel played a hard game, yes indeed. He was a great defender for the Dutch though. Hard to say he was useless. He never had any real rash challenges, and you'll never get sent off for persistent fouling.

The missed corner for the Dutch side would have been a non-issue had Spain not scored. These things go both ways during games and Spain had also one corner that they did not get either.

Oh yeah I don't think it affected the outcome of the match at all, I just couldn't believe Webby missed it. lol

So what now, with the World Cup over. I've been pretty much living from game to game the past month and will be lost when there is no more football to watch.

Meh on any national league, the CL next on the footy front. Maybe I could do some academic work again. Then there's always the hockey season starting in a couple of months.

Second half Spain done exactly what i wanted them to do all along, they were so direct at times it was almost long, could have done with Cesc a bit earlier tho. Football is better to watch with space. I dont think Germany were defensive, just Spains midfield containment game made them look that way.

I thought a bit about this earlier and I have to amend my previous comments and agree. Germany were just outclassed and outpsyched; their tactics weren't the issue. Xavi et al. just didn't let them do anything.

I really am bummed that it's over. I know I'm in the minority here, but I really really really enjoyed this tournament and the all-virgin final made it just perfect for me. Dutch or Spaniards, didn't matter; we got a new winner and that's just fucking AWESOME. Combine that with the old powers of Argentina, Italy, France, and Brazil in varying degrees of self-destruct mode and you have yourselves a World Cup for the ages.

Oh well, Euro 2012 coming soon!

:(

Why would you think you're in the minority? I enjoyed the shit out of the tournament, barring England's shite performance and a mediocre final.

That's awesome about Forlan getting the Golden Ball. Hmmm the germans win best young player two tourneys running.

They need to make an award for most entertaining manager - and then just award it to Maradona in perpetuity.

And, for all of you suffering from post-World Cup depression - have a look at my blog.

i enjoyed it despite the early rounds and the final was disappointing too thanks to the dutch... good on spain for hanging in there... well deserved winners.

Last swipe at England. No way they underperformed, they got just as far as they could. England are shit and will be shit for years to come. FACT.

Originally I thought Spain was going to win, but then Germany's good performances throughout changed my mind... then they came crashing down. I really thought NED was going to pull it off (was soo wanting a PK shootout... love the tension), but then at the last possible moment... well, that's football for you.

I yelled "SHORYUKEN!" when De Jong kicked him... fucking lol and it should have been an instant red.

I wonder if the Soccterpus will be employed again?

I'm off to create the Football Subforum, so we can continue these great discussions throughout the year, as well as Chen's great stuff on his blog here.
