A not-very-serious question I want to ask you all...

How many more do you think Autechre will have in them before they hang everything up and call it quits? I personally would like to see at least three or four more. Something also tells me they may well continue with Gescom past the time that Autechre is done.

Sorry in advance if this thread makes you  or rage.

They're the type of blokes, in my opinion, that will carry on doing this for as long as they possibly can. I don't think it'll be an "emotional"/relationship thing between them that stops them doing it, I don't even distance would stop them now with the interwebs and such like. They might hang up the Autechre name (which I doubt very much, but who knows) but I think they'll still work together, perhaps releasing solo/other collabs more often.

Imagine referring to Untilted as "middle-period Autechre". :emotawesomepm9:

We heard the piece Aphex Onlychild of Richard James Jr. carefully: We think it would be very helpful if he listens to our work "pce freeze 2.8i," which is electronic music, and a young girl's voice singing with herself. Because he would then immediately stop with all these post-African repetitions, and he would look for changing tempi and changing rhythms, and he would not allow to repeat any rhythm if it varied to some extent and if it did not have a direction in its sequence of variations

would be awesome if they were still going when they were old & wrinkly.

it's too late for them to have a 'decent' job so they're stuck to making money with making tunes. i really feel for them

im sure there are a million universities that would love for them to teach something, and they do stuff for audio equipment manufacturers, right?

York University asked them if they wanted a scholarship or something there, I believe they refused though they said it would be quite fun to do.

No, I don't think that's what's going on at all man..

By the way, Untilted is way on its way to becoming middle-period ae.. It's already 3 releases old. That's the same as tri repeate -> confield.

They are one of the extremely few artists in any genre that have releases consistently great stuff, while not making the same record twice nor stagnating by staying in the past.

I believe ae are true futurists in that they will always evolve past what has been.. Many have wanted another Confield, or another Tri, but they are actually only interested in going further into the future. Not going back.

Their discography was impressive 9 years ago, now it is imo one of the most impressives discographies on the planet. Imagine what it will be in 10 years.

I don't think that they're the kindda' guys that just pulls the plug and quit making music.

They're doing what they want to do and what they love.

It'll probably be at least ten more years before we've heard the last of mighty Autechre!

After that they'll probably hit the streets and start doing graffity again or somethin'. :mcgriff:

Yeah I agree with everyone who said they probably won't really stop completely... I'd be surprised if they don't ever slow down though, surely it's gonna eventually become difficult to come up with brand new ideas EVERY SINGLE TIME.

To be honest at this point they could just put out any old crap and people would still call it genius. Not that they would, i'm sure they're not like that. I'm just saying that there'll always be money for them in the IDM business. Even if they quit right now, I think they've got pretty full CVs.

They already have deals for product development, with all their knowledge on production and sound design, they'll always be balls deep in ca$h.

i think autechre will continue making music in some form until one of them dies. i honestly do.

god, sean minus rob or rob minus sean is a very depressing thought.

I hope they do a double LP where each of them has their own disc, that way we can see the differences in style between the two. I would imagine they are fairly inter-related at this point though.

i'd love to hear something like that. most prog bands tend to do it (see: emerson lake & palmer's 'works'), and autechre are pretty much prog idm so yeah something.

It seems almost too predictable tho. They would only do something like that if no one would see it coming. Like maybe if they went through some kind of radical operation where they fused their brains together and became one person, made a few albums like that, and then were like "ok the next album is gonna be a double disc of Sean tracks and Rob tracks" so the challenge for them would be to try to remember which part of their collective personality and talent was Robs and which was Seans.

I don't know if the exact words were 'product development', but I've definitely read in one of the interviews linked from this site that Autechre have had words with manufacturers of audio/music equipment, but they always have to sign non-disclosure agreements on these things, so there are no specifics out there.

Again by plughing through the interviews linked here, you can read that their stated goal is basically to keep music as long as they find it interesting and fun. And one of em (forget who) said if he had to do something else later, he wouldn't mind being a prof at an educational institution. Re: the thesis, he said 'I'd submit the Autechre discography.'

I hope they continue at what they do very well for a long time. Even if releases did slow up.. it would be nice to know that there will always be something else to look forward to.

their albums will culminate into a pinnacle, blindingly awesome achievement and then they will dwindle back down to incunabula-esque material

dream on. incunabula is passé.

and look what you've made me do. that's the first time of used that word online.
