Who wants to take a desktop to a gig though?

Also you'll be stuck to working on music only in one place. It can be good to go and work on music elsewhere for a bit.

I'm used to lugging around 8x10 bass cabs and other crazy heavy shit to gigs, a fucking desktop does not trigger any sort of laziness in my bones. I would much rather buy two desktops than one laptop at the moment. When It seems like its not a unproductive expense in my budget I will probably buy two laptops for shows.

I do like taking my laptop around to program tracks but I do not want to spend all the money required to get a really nice laptop that can run all the things I want or the worry that it will overheat break down and I will have no way to fix it besides sending it to the manufacturer.

i've used macs for most my life until recently since my old mac laptop went kaput and i couldn't afford a new one. so i bought a toshiba instead. best decision i've made concerning comps. in a world where most are making that transition from pc to mac, i'm proud of being one of the few going in reverse.

I can't endorse Alienware.

I had a top of the line and all that shit for about 8 months before my first crash. Motherboard/Powersupply failure. Lost tons of tunes, and it was right when it was bought by Dell so I had to suffer through non-english speaking tech support while on a vacation for almost 2 days.

Then after about a year and 6 months I got crash number 2, which was for my harddrives. Same deal. When I sent it back I asked for them to remove RAID0 so I don't lose my entire 15+ years worth of composition next time. They returned it to me, with RAID still on it. When I tried to remove RAID, I couldn't install Windows anymore but I could install Linux.

So yeah, fck Alienware!

Mac Mini

You have to carry a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and a computer the size of an external hard drive. That's a little bit more size-/weight-wise than a laptop and, for the cost, pretty fracking powerful.

i cannot describe how much more difficult it is to take a desktop to shows than a laptop. believe me, i've done it several times.

here was our gear list for a show a year ago, before laptop

5 piece drums, 2 crashes and ride

bass, snare and hihat drum kit

bass guitar

bass cab and head

guitar

guitar combo amp

guitar effects (reverb, delay, overdrive, tuner)

trumpet

mic

desktop tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse

uc 33e

lexicon jamman looper

power strip

many cables

(we have an electribe now too, but that's a fairly recent addition)

maybe it's because i'm used to being in bands setting up tons of shit, but the worst part was easily the desktop. it sucks at being moved, i was scared someone would kick it (not to mention the monitor) and it makes you look like a tool.

if you're not playing live, whocares. desktops are cheaper, more customizable, but if you're not into that it doesn't matter.

rack mounted desktop

now that's smart thinking right there kids

BFC proudly supports getting rid of the lazy conformist mindset that you can only use laptops for shows.

seriously even if you don't get tactical and organized... how hard is it to turn a desktop on its side and put a monitor on top of it? plug in just as many cords as you would need to for a laptop besides plugging in the monitor... again laptops seem to overheat easier, cost more, cost more to repair and aren't all that more convenient/quick to setup and transport.

I think the only "desktop" i'd rceommend would be an iMac.

Its all 1 unit and comes with a nice carrying case. The mouse and keyboard it comes with is paper thin and light. Oh and the display is hot sex.

lol... i did! although i never had a pc before. for me, i'm refusing to pay for something i can easily do on a less expensive system. it's not all about a "sexy" looking computer for me.

i believe that the ipod classic will be the last apple purchase i'll ever make.

Yes!

My roommate bought a macbook air when his HP crashed for the sole reason that he liked the way it looked... and a week later he lost both jobs.

I honestly don't get what the big deal is about macs. apple seem to be obsessed with patronising their users. they lock out all these features that appeal to people with a decent knowledge of technology and things just get over-simplified in the process.

just a small example is like on my ipod. when you plug your headphones in, it switches the ipod on. thanks apple, but I'm perfectly capable of sliding the little thing on top to unlock it instead.

PC is the lesser of two evils IMO.

*expects backlash*

I don't see a problem with that example, nor am I aware of any features being "locked out".

Also, you have to run Live, Reason, and most other audio programs through Wine on linux. Dunno how well it works, but it sounds like a hassle. Renoise has a native linux version though. Fuck yeah.

Haha me too. Having said that my ipod classic has lasted me a good 3 years. But apple software annoys the shit out of me.
