would Warp sign Autechre now?

Recommended Posts

we all know the likes of Aphex, LFO, Squarepusher and AE are the founding pillars of the label but would the Warp records of today sign Autechre now if they were previously on another label or had only just come out as a new experimental duo?

Saying that would they sign any other experimental band like AE or just pick off what evers popular off smaller labels because they're much bigger now?

No way. Warp seem to be only signing cool new acts like FlyLo and HudMo. Its more of an accessible poppy sound unless its a release from the old school... Maximo Park :trashbear:

A new experimental act without an existing fanbase would be stuck to the realms of net labels these days, then maybe get picked up by another label after a few releases.

(imo of course)

zero chance that Moves of Ten (if it was Ae's first release and it came out in 2010) would get released on any huge electronic label. My opinion on why it was released is because Warp will release anything the boys give them

That's a good question. And I don't know.

It does seem that Warp have moved away from electronic type music. Film seems to dominate their website more and more, that Trash Humper feature got on my fucking tits.

But when Warp still have Squarepusher, Aphex, BoC and Autechre on their books do they need to sign any more electronic acts? Perhaps not.

That doesn't really answer your question, does it? LoL.

That is impossible to say since Autechre have had such a huge impact on the IDM-genre and electronic music in general.

It would be hard (to say the least) to anticipate how alot of other artists and bands would sound like without the influence of Autechre.

Would people appreciate the fresh gust of glitchy wind that Autechre would've introduced? I think not.

A part of Autechre's success is that their audience was slowly introduced to the complex rhythms and glitchy awesomeness from,

in retrospective, "generic beats" and "cheesy sounds".

Is that legit?

personally I think the most innovative new electronic artist wouldn't even get a look in at Warp these days as there are so many artists and sub labels now that specialise in whatever

it's like the BBC with Wogan or John Peel; a big founding name that showcases the company because it's had the time to establish even though the dynamics of the company have changed to your Chris Moyles' and Jo Wiley's

if Sean and Rob were just starting out now i think Warp wouldn't even give them audition although I think Mike would snatch them up in a heartbeat (maybe)

nah AE would have to be making cookie cutter acid techo, modern 2step, dubstep or wonky

:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

If they hadn't been on Warp in the first place [and this goes for BoC, 'pusher, Aphex, etc] then it would be a completely different label than it is today.

they wouldn't even sign a band that is similar but better. only in case there would be a very large hype around it. that basically what they do nowadays isn't it? they pick some very hyped band so they are hyped themselves. it doesn't work the other way round even so people wish it would

woops lol i clicekd on this thread and didnt read the subtitle and then i sat in here for like an hour and i got the impression you guys were trolling trying to make noobs think autechre wasnt signed to warp or something...

Heh maybe not that much but they sure have a lot of influential material. They should change their name now, no weird and radical projets anymore and they're more swell than reasonable people

yeah true I guess. but the sound that afx, boc, ae, :squarepusher_logo: , black dog and the etcetera crew created could only go so far before it collapsed in on itself. I think warp knew that their time as the "future of electronic music" was eventually going to end so now they're more of a general indie label with a respectable back-catalogue.

exactly. there's no money to be made in fringe electronic music anymore anyway, nobody buys music except loyal fans/followers and lots of labels that haven't adapted have been forced to closed shop in the past 5-6 years.

that's a really weird question....

do u mean if they sent their first demo now? or they sent a demo of their most recent stuff now and warp had never heard of them before?

really, a lot's changed since warp signed ae.......

its not so weird as it kind of implies that even if you are as good or very similar to autechre you will never get signed to warp today same with boc or aphex
