a mates bro went to some gig in the 80's where OMD were supporting, he was then amazed that someone could sumggle a whole cabbage into a concert.....i'm sure you can guess the rest but apparently bass strings do make a good salad maker

good example! man, i love a few early heart songs but they went past the point of no return in the 80s

Indeed, some of their early songs are amazing.

I'm with you on "Easy Lover"...fantastic song. Also "Don't Lose My Number". He had a few good ones as head of Genesis too, notably "Misunderstanding". These 3 songs are all 5 stars in my book.

yeah that was pretty embarrassing.

Oh wow! :fail:

Genesis? You mean to tell me you had a untreated bipolar Peter Gabriel--flaming white-hot genius--and a pre-suck Collins and this is what you do? No wonder they were rendered asunder and Phil became....Phil Collins. Although, I'll always give him "Easy Lover" any time he asks. But even that took the help of Philip Bailey so, meh--Jesus, did they check the yarbles at the door for it?--that's some pitched-out range!

Gabriel, on the other hand, continues to get ready for his day, open his door and walk on water.

I'm sorry, the suckitude that Phil attained is of such magnificent proportions that Phil always-already sucked. It is inconceivable to consider a pre-suck Phil.

I have to mentally separate classy drummer Phil from frontman Phil. They exist as two distinct entities in my mind.

edit: it's dishonest, but effective as a coping mechanism.

that's a good idea. anyway listen to that guitar on sky saw. fucking hell.

Yet an excellent 80s pop song, specially when you watch the Breakfast Club.

Yeah, it is a very good pop song, but it's just a shame they sold out so bad :(

Have you heard Sons & Fascination? As in the whole album, not just that one track? That album, Sister Feeling Call and Empires & Dance are MILES ahead of Don't You Forget About Me in terms of innovation and timelessness. I like Don't You... but it's a slab of stinking cheese. Their early 80s stuff was "cerebral" and generally just brilliant.

P.S. Phil Collins should have never decided to replace the drums for the microphone. He's an awesome drummer, but I can't stand him singing.

i remember "someone, somewhere, in summertime"... great track.

also phil collins invented the gated snare, quintessential sound of the 80s along with the orch5 stab.

In Trance As Mission and Love Song are brilliant songs, and The American is especially great.

We need a favorite orch5 usage thread. I'd vote for the stabs at the end of "The Dreaming." Fuck Trevor Horn and his wanton CMI abuse.

^that's a good one. never saw the vid before.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned bowie yet.

OH MAN thats the most obvious! scary monsters is like the last bowie album i really like on any complete level. some songs here and there, sure, but beyond that, no. just no.

also, depeche mode. though i honestly didn't mind their last album, in fact some of the songs are awesome.

not 80s but weezer had two albums that 11-14 year old me LOOOOVED. OH RIVERS! SWOON! then green came out and... yeah. not happening. and it's just gotten worse from there. some of my friends have stuck in there. for 16 years now. thinking it will get better, somehow. it's like battered wife syndrome. "WEEZER ONLY CAME OUT WITH RATITUDE BECAUSE THEY LOVE ME SO MUCH!!!"

as far as "the dreaming" goes, fun fact - that song was originally called "the abo song" because kt didn't realize that abo is actually not a flattering term.
