i have the ability to figure out people in a short period of time whether they are nay or yay, for various reasons... i don't think i could do the online thing

I'd think any avenue of meeting girls or your mate would be a good one.

A good friend of mine has apparently met this absolutely fantastic guy on some dating site. They've been talking for a couple months now and they're both definitely interested. They're attempting to set up a weekend or so for him to come down and meet in person, but as the guy is from Canada, it's gonna be a bit before that happens.

I have this very perspective regarding the whole thing (doesn't help that I've turned into a cynical jaded cunt when it comes to women/relationships, especially online), but I truly hope the best for 'em... but still at the concept.

The girl I'm currently... I don't know the term since we aren't going out but basically both want to, but it's hard to set-up anything to go do, anyway, I met her through a friend on Facebook.

We've actually went and done stuff though since we only live like 15 miles from each other, except neither of us can drive and the public transit for both of us is the shits. I don't think that counts as internet dating, but the internet has helped us stay connected, so to speak, since we both prefer it to texting each other. Odd how telephone calls have become cumbersome.

Pros: It is 95% girls on the rebound, so getting laid is like shooting fish in a barrel. And honestly, that's all you should use it for. The London bit of OKCupid is awesome, met lots of really interesting people. I don't know about the other areas of OKCupid.

OKCupid has a great vibe to it - quirky and funny, and it encourages group discussions (see the journals) which is unusual for a dating site.

I've noticed that internet dating (especially on okcupid) is much better now than it was about 5 years ago (the last time I tried it) - presumably because Facebook has made more people 'get' socialising on the net a bit more.

My take on it: Internet dating is good for finding _potential_ good matches - IMHO much better than just hanging out in bars hoping to randomly end up talking to someone who you might get on with. But with the internet, until you meet the person in real life, a lot of the things you think you know about them are probably idealizations made up by your mind to fill in the gaps you don't know. Its not that people try to mislead, its just that we tend to idealise. So: use it to find potentially interesting people, chat a bit, then try and meet IRL earlier rather than later.

Meeting a partner through a mutual friend is perhaps the best way, but after that I'd put internet dating ahead of 'meeting someone in a bar' or 'meeting someone at work'.

Meeting someone at your kickboxing/shark fishing/archery/whatever class would also be towards the awesome end of the scale, as is meeting someone at university.
