I'm certainly not scorning softwares or saying that they are not able to produce good music or whatever. I'm fully aware of what they can do! And there is a bunch of softs without which my life would be ruined... :)

Maybe I just expressed a fear of mine which is not true and never will...

I was talking about sounds and I definitely know that you can achieve great things with softwares. But when you have instruments under your hands and not just under the click of a mouse it's a different feeling.

a common opinion among hardware enthusiasts. come to my studio and see how tactile software can be. with the right assortment of midi controllers, you can have way more hands-on knob-twiddling options than most hardware can boast.

does any of your hardware have a programmable x/y touchpad? programmable joystick with springback?

As a matter of fact, which soft and hardware you are buying defines your sound, and with today's' spread of softwares, I just prefer buying real machines, it's a question of taste...

it doesn't define your sound, it influences it. i've heard music made on fruityloops that sounds like floops... and i've heard tracks made in fruityloops that sounds comepletely unique.

Furthermore, buying softwares is also expensive as hell!

who said anything about buying? :fear:

honestly though, you can't pirate a tb-303...

Ok, but to be fair you did say that you were dead against the fact that everyone who buys software ends up with the same sounds, which is really just not true. In fact, often the software is alot more flexible than its hardware counterpart.

i agree. i love hardware, but software is infinitely more flexible/customizable. although that's not always a good thing. with software it's far more common to find yourself noodling around with the app for hours just experimenting and not actually accomplish anything. whereas hardware noodling general goes somewhere. too many options can be a bad thing.

Garritan Personal Orchestra

How does this sound? I'm incredibly interested in something that can acurately model a symphony (as well as solo strings if possible). The problem is actually getting to hear anything before spending enough to purcahse a used Toyota! ;)

I really dont reccomend it.

Its fine for making sketches. I used it when writing my composition pieces for school... but as far as having actual quality sounding recordings... no. It just sounds fakey. I get much better results with the light version of VSL that comes free with Kontakt 2 (but no solo instruments... or at least, very few... definately no solo strings)

Try the MOTU symphonic instrument. I havent, but its worth a shot.

Also, I guess listen to the samples for garritan on thier website. It might fit your needs... but I could never get it to sound very real.

But truely, the only way to really accurately model a symphony orchestra, is going to cost you a fuck load. There is the VSL opus bundle for $1000 which is pretty good for the price. I took a orchestral mockup class, and this is what we used. But the full version is $10,000.

Anything affordable, is going to be in the "good enough for now, and the price" catagory.

Damn, that's too bad. I was afraid of that.

You'd think it couldn't be THAT hard to make a good orchestral sample library and sell that for something less than a downpayment on a new home.

well, you have to have an entire orchestra to record, and the recording takes a long time, so you're spending crazy money right there. then theres all the editing time, to make the instruments playable on a keyboard etc

its really a lot of work, which is why the high price.

Hah, I know. My sister plays with the Virginia Symphony, and did a bit with the NSO as a part of their youth fellowship program while in High school. I should just sneak a minidisc recorder into her violin case and go to town! heheh

I dont want to hurt your ears.

I picked it up for really cheap, and just got it to noodle around on... and thats all I've done. Nothing really musical has come out of it

I do want to use the bass in a track though. I feel like playing more. Its the fattest sounding bass in the world. Its an original '78 stingray... huge bass. When ever I'd play it (like ensemble/private instructions at school) my teachers would just be like "shit thats huge!"

Need to get my fingers moving again!

I think the only way of getting really good orchestral emulation would be real physical modelling.

But it would probably be even more expensive than an exstensive sample library.

Viola's get shit on so bad. It's like a never ending cycle too. The peoples who aren't good enough to make the second Violins are shoved onto Viola's. Viola parts are by and large some of the most boring Ive ever seen in my life. It's strange too, because Kcinsu's totally righ,t it has such a warm and lush tone, doesn't get tinny at the top like a Violin.
