Squelchy / farty synths

Recommended Posts

I know its kind of taboo or whatever to try and copy synths but for the sake of learning, Ive been listening to aphex twin's come to daddy and trying to figure out how to make that squelchy synth tone thats used for the bass line in Funny Little Man and something similar comes in at a higher pitch towards the end of IZ-US. Does anyone know how to make sounds anywhere similar to these? And also how I could come close in Ableton? So far Ive tried starting out with a really low pitched square or saw but i cant get any modulations to come even close, they always end up making it way too distorted and harsh sounding, closer to a gritty guitar sound. I want my bass to fart, help please.

it sounds like more than just pitch and filter envelopes though, especially in IZ-US which sounds like it could be percussion with effects to get that squeaky effect on it. Im not good with the technical terms, but the synths have a sort of rolling/fluttering texture going on in them, as though something subtle is attached to a LFO. Ryan McAllister made something similar similar in this video: ryan mcallister tutorial. Even when he turns all of his max devices off the synth tone has a sort of bubbling/popping sound in it. I tried taking a look at where the knobs on his Massive are, but Im not sure how I would replicate that in Ableton.

Well, if I'm listening to the right sound in 'IZ-US' (it comes in at 2:12), it seems to be some sort of acid line ring modulated with a lowpass filter over everything; perhaps the low pass is also modulated slightly by an envelope follower.

As for 'Funny Little Man', one possible way to get that tone might be to load a keyboard-style sampler with an audio file, create a loop that starts as soon as you trigger the sampler and adjust the loop length to such a small size that you get a pitched tone. Experiment with different samples to get a more suitable timbre. From there I would simply modulate it with an amplitude envelope to taste and put a gentle low pass filter over the entire thing (perhaps with some keyboard tracking).

sample your own fart. pitch it up, pitch it down. layer your fart. your own fart's options are endless.

back in the day, there was a thread in EKT like "make your best fart noise with a synth, and post it here"

good times.
