I don't see your point, I like heaps of shit that is massively popular. That isn't a criteria I bother with.

I don't know why you're so upset anyway. These are just my opinions and I really don't matter, no one cares what I think anyway. Nor am I trying to change anyone's mind; people can listen to whatever the hell they want. I'm just expressing my point of view. Feel free to ignore me, that is not a problem. This is a discussion forum... It would be pretty boring if everyone liked all the same shit. Just take it with a grain of salt.

Aphex Twin tends to attract an interesting crowd. This woman, who was either a Transylvanian princess or a scientist, insisted on lining up shots of the local liquor hierbas for the Aphex crew for the final few hours of the night. “It is not every time that Bach or Mozart comes to Ibiza,” she said.

pretty spot on quote there

he's not on the same level, but in terms of modern music, his innovations and amount of "genius" or hard work put into making his music transcend into some deeply puzzling territory definitely brings to mind bach.

i do not think aphex twin is overrated at all.

not for me to decide, first off, and i think i would be wrong if i said that.

just because the beats on "4" have dated doesn't mean that Drukqs isn't an indisputably great piece of music, and, now that i think of it, a "monumental human achievement" in music.

that said i really don't care to hear any of his music anymore apart from ambient 85-92 or SAW2.

nobody else (since the 90's) on the planet can/could beat Aphex Twin, Autechre, Plaid, and Squarepusher, at electronic music, imo.

i wouldn't say any of them are "horribly overrated". except maybe Ae at times.

For what it's worth... Saying that ae are overrated is fairly preposterous as they're not even really famous. Richard is the only IDM superstar so he was always bound to be overrated by default, as any random who has never listened to anything electronic in their life will find his stuff before anyone else's and so he will be the trigger for their revelation that music made with machines can be as interesting as "real" music.

Autechre I personally feel are worthy of all the praise they elicit. I don't rate Incunabula or Amber but I think their work since that era is utterly brilliant, especially Draft, Untilted and Quaristice. I don't think Oversteps is as good but that's just my personal taste and I don't expect artists to stay in the same place for their entire career so whatever they want to do is ok.

Squarepusher's work I think is inconsequential. To me it's all novelty value and little else. I've heard vast quanitities of his work and none of it moves me at all. It's like watching a guy do a thousand push-ups... Undoubtedly impressive but quite pointless. That's how I feel about most of Aphex Twin's stuff.

Plaid I think are good but their work also tends to come off as a bit novel. They're into silly, happy sounding stuff, which I can't say I appreciate in any way. For this reason I love their soundtrack material but am not much into their own albums other than Not For Threes.

we have completely opposite tastes/views :) which is funny. the only things i agree with you on there is 'Not for Three's', and Richard is something of an "IDM superstar".

Incunabula and Amber are 2 of my favourite albums, btw. Plaid are obviously not overly into "silly" sounding music if you've heard most of their stuff, and are actually very accomplished musicians and very nice guys. Ae are most definitely "famous" and idolized among electronic heads and are mega hyped/overrated by the fan boys, in a similar way as BoC are, but much more so. Squarepusher is utterly brilliant. a musical genius i would say. these are all facts. like it or not. lol

But he is horribly overrated.

Yeah Ae are sometime overrated by the fan boiz. But you seriously dont think Aphex is overrated?

ok, yeah, he is a lickle bit overrated. lol

but he is a fucking genius.

does he deserve all the fame 'n "IDM superstar" status 'n everything? i dunno.

(but he is a fucking genius.)

nobody else could've done tracks like Windowlicker or Come to Daddy.. or Drugs, but RDJ. so maybe he is deserved of it.

not really about the Warp mister, more about you hating on stuff that is amazing and me not understanding why you do....and then realizing you have too-cool-for-school-itis, which is fine but hating on the Twin because he is too good at sequencing is going too far even for a hipster. Congrats! :emotawesomepm9:

Didn't you see the pics in the Sun? They were linked with the beautiful and classy melodies from "Nine", but then got caught snogging the bass from "DJs Go Bezerk" outside some trashy club in SE London.
