official "beat scene" / wonky / los angeles thread

i've been investigating this scene, i'm always trying to find something i'll enjoy. i think this may be one of the few "scenes" that is worth following.

statement: i don't care about the genre term, it doesn't matter. if you know what i'm talking about when i say "wonky" or "LA beat music" then we can all agree that it makes sense to use the term.

so much great stuff. discuss. i would like this thread to be larger and more respected than the "witch house" thread. not that "witch house" isn't good but this is good.

this is good stuff.

i really like this stuff.

MOST WELL KNOWN ARTISTS:

flying lotus, hudson mohawke, baths, rustie

some artists:

teebs, mux mool, shlohmo

i do not like baths at this point in time.

teebs new album is great, one of the best of the year.

also the album "certified air raid material" by edIT is fantastic

gaslamp killer

i have a ticket to see flying lotus + hudson mohawke + gaslamp killer + harmonic 313 + others in january next year. very excited.

it's an event, where last year's in melbourne had samiyam. i'm fairly sure samiyam playing at next year's along with flylo and hudmo would've been the icing on an already incredibly tasty cake:0

i started out liking hudson mohawke and flying lotus at the same time. but flying lotus i still like and hm kinda fizzled. i think with hm tracks there are too many samples of someone saying "hudson mohawke" and i'm like "i know who the fuck you are already!"

that aside, i like the lesser known artists better like shlomo and teebs. i'm not sure if robot koch would be in the same package as the rest, but i really enjoy that dudes stuff!

hudson mohawke is my favorite. and rustie now too. kelpe is also on a beat scene i guess and i love him. also dorian concept, flying lotus. And also DIMLITE is actually my favorite, he's fucking genius. Take is nice too, and Architeq, and Fulgeance. And all others I don't like usually.

I love how HudMo tags his tracks, he really should get collaborating with some vocalists, it's a shame the rhianna stuff didn't work out

As pimped by Com Truise, the Alphabet Soup EP by Stephen Farris. I'm drawing quite a few similarities between this and Mux Mool, so definitely check it out if you're a fan. I might as well mention TOKiMONSTA as well; Midnight Menu is quite good, a favorite being Lucid Waking. Beyond that, I would suggest basically anything off of Hyperdub as well as Nosaj Thing and Daedelus, but I'm sure 99% of the folks reading this thread already know about them.

I think dabrye should get more props for being one of the forefathers of this style du jour, shit Instrmntl was made in 2002

Lone + Keaver & Brouse also deserve some love up in here (K&B happen to make an appearance on the mix in my sig btw :trashbear: )

And yeah, as already said Fly Lo + Hud Mo all excellent IMO. I'm sure I'll come across more.

Just missed Teebs at the Magical Properties gig in Vancouver... Picked up his album (signed) though. Nosaj Thing is great but still isn't quite there yet imo. The more I listen to Flylo the more I find myself liking 1983 and Reset EP; Cosmogramma is so fucking crowded.

Should be back in Aus in time to check out that huge bill with HM and Flylo, gonna be fucking excellent.

I must check out some Rustie I think!

I can't get hyped on Zomby or Rustie or any of that shit. It's too candy bright.

That Mux Mool sounded pretty proper. I was feeling that synthline. I'll have to peep the album.

This is another really appealing thing about the beat scene. It's full of actual performers. A lot of these cats really have their shit together in the live arena. They also apply a lot of real time musicianship in the studio. It really gives the music a much more natural feeling.

this 4 sure.

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

As well as One/Three and his Tadd Mullinix albums Winking Makes a Face both in 2001. And Prefuse 73's debut also in 2001. Hello. This LA/wonky stuff is just an evolution of what's been going on for about 10 years. Which I have no problem with of course, just stating, especially since so much non-LA stuff has been posted already, that's more similar to Dabrye and Prefuse 73. I quite like a lot of it, but not into the HudMo/Rustie/etc stuff very much.

Deepex, that Mux Mool track can be had off of Ghostly Swim, albeit a much more boring version after I watched that vid. Also, there a few choice tracks off of the Adult Swim Singles Program, the most relevant to this thread being a Killer Mike track produced by FlyLo, and a Washed Out tune.
