i wouldn't be able to tell you why i think those tracks are so happy, but they are to me too and you put it into words nicely. i was also just thinking anything from "Through Friendly Waters" and "My Dogan"

but then again, kettel's discography rarely comes across as solemn to me. Volleyed Iron is close.

every ae release has it's happy moments. you're right about the quaristice releases, it gets pretty murky by then

Kettel wins all day, everyday for me :ok: . I think the closer you can sound to lullabies or children songs without invoking any particular one, then you're someplace happy. Unfortunately, some may not have had a happy childhood so they would disagree with me and I would mourn their loss.

Squarepusher can do this brilliantly. I know this video is not official but you couldn't pick a better subject matter (nb4 :pedobear:)

ah yes! what about pule?

I find both of these to be very emotional, but not necessarily happy. Stop Look Listen I definitely agree with though, such an idiosyncratic track, it's so definitively an LP5-era track, yet it would sound completely out of place were it actually on LP5.

Slip and Gaekwad definitely... I love Gaekwad so much... it doesn't get enough praise...

I think a lot of them are sort of uplifting or warm... like they're definitely on the positive side of things but calling it happy would be a stretch (I mean tracks like Pir, Pen Expers, Krib, the end of Treale (most of Oversteps really...) Flutter etc).

And some have brief moments that are happy like the beginning of Stop Look Listen and Maphive6.1 (which both gradually turn sinister and ominous).

I wouldn't call their music generally depressing, I don't think I'd listen to it if it didn't have it's fair share of upbeat moments.

The "happy" melodies in Eidetic Casien are meant to be ironic, I think. The track actually has powerful feelings of fear, paranoia and claustrophobia.

Yeah definitely, I'd say the same goes for Rpeg and Under BOAC

the first time i heard rpeg i thought it was the coolest thing in the world. that melody doesn't sound happy or sad to me, it just sounds purely and extremely cool. i get the same effect from a lot of amon tobin tracks.

crystel might be the happiest. laughing quarter is light-hearted and fun but also quite heavy.

for their later material, theme of sudden roundabout always sounded weirdly happy to me. it provides a playful retreat after the chaos of surripere.

  • 1 year later...

Crystel, The Egg and Chatter. The Garbage ep is pretty upbeat for me.

I would like Autechre to make a more summery sounding album. Still mad as fuck but a bit more cheerful if you get my drift.
