I really don't think any of their stuff is happy but it's all about the context you put it in. Inhake 2 is my vote though

There's a lot of bittersweet/nostalgic stuff at play in autechre for me.

Goz Quarter, por ejemplo, makes me happy and also gives me the crai.

One of my favorite things about Ae is how they dig up these emotions that aren't easy or clearly delineated; it's ambiguous but deeply felt. I know a couple folks who read it as emotionally empty and cold and technical, and that's so far from my reaction that I can only assume we have totally different reference points for this kind of thing.

So, like, Goz Quarter can remind me of being massively depressed and sitting in my room wanting to do fuck all for the next year and a half and having a pet come up and try to cheer me up and it sort of works but also just makes me a sad because this thing loves me and I've probably been an absent cunt to the poor little guy.

:cuts:

But if your idea of happy isn't sometimes muddled with ambiguous shit like that maybe Ae just sounds cold and technical or harmonically fucked up?

Where's my goddamn medication.

I find pretty much all of Chiastic Slide to have this really joyous, almost hopeful feel to it, but of course in an appropriately ambiguous way.

I felt they got a little bit colder between Draft and Quaristice but those albums are still pretty emotional for the most part. I agree, I wouldn't listen to them if I thought they were JUST cold and clinical sounding, cos that kinda thing just bores me. I've always found that their strength is in contrasting simple, strongly emotional music with percussion, textures and song structures that are abstract, mechanical and cold. It's that contrast that I think makes it even more emotional. Pen Expers is the best example: It's something so beautiful and heart wrenching trying desperately to burst through a wall of noise. I feel sorry for it :P

I mean what kind of happy are we talking here, like light fun happy or like tears of joy happy or what?

Far and away the happiest shit ever is at 4:16 on Lego Feet part 4 and then the trackt that follows that one.

I light up w/ a bright smile every time that slap of happiness hits the speakers.

Skipping through cornfields of gay joy!!

Taking one look at Sean I don't think that's ever going to happen.

"We were in Germany with Autechre and we were all pissed off 'cos we hadn't been provided with a trailer. Sean from Autechre broke into someone else's trailer and stole loads of champagne, distributed them to everyone then got so plastered that he rugby-tackled a certain electronic artist into the mud!"

definitely silliest ae track.

not sure if happiest, but definitely silliest. not sure if there's normally a difference, but I can kind of picture a sweetly retarded kid wigging out to it inside the bouncey castle, and it's not exactly happy. it's sort of alarming. how much of it is glee and how much misfiring neurons? but nonetheless he's having a good time, so you kind of go along with it and hope his parents properly secured his helmet.
