I wish they'd just lay off Akira, its so culturally tied with post nuclear Japan, it should never have anything to do with America.

^^ I'm glad that the Ghost In The Shell remake seems in production hell too (never want to witness either get remade)

I'm also glad that the Oldboy remake fell through (Will Smith as Oh Dae Su  )....

oh my god. that would have been inhumane! it is truly the work of god that that fell through

fuck the stupid shitheads who need a studio to spend millions making an inferior film just so that they won't have to read some fucking subtitles.

[The Spielberg / Will Smith version of Oldboy] was said to be a new adaptation of the original manga, rather than a straight remake of Park Chan-Wook‘s widely praised (and quite excellent) film.

  Quote
it will go out to Steven Spielberg, Matthew Vaughn and, should they pass, Danny Boyle.

I'm not nearly as angry anymore. A completely different version based on the same source material could be alright, and the potential directors look like professionals...

Not that I'm interested in seeing it. But I'm not quite as angry.

I for one think this could turn out interesting, providing they don't soften the blows and keep it dark. (I really enjoy Will Smiths acting)

:wtf:

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

I read the manga before watching the film... the manga has the shiiitttest ending ever... but the film completely blew me away.

I bet they don't want to follow in Park Chan-Wook's taboo treading footsteps. Spielberg's gonna make an Oldboy for ALL the family :emotawesomepm9:

is the manga ending really not good? i haven't read it and having not read it and only watched the anime i find gaps and bits that i don't understand, i reckon the manga could clear up some of those questions.

Edited by yek

Theres an anime?? wasn't aware of this.. Well basically the ending of the manga didn't make much logical sense to me... it just wasn't convincing. The whole thing built up to this climactic moment of enlightenment... and it was just such a let down, really ruined any credibility of what came before it.

The movie however took the ending and turned it into something both shocking and incredibly logical, so you're left there baffled by how much sense everything suddenly makes, in a sick sort of way.

Hats off to Park Chan-Wook.

Will Smith isn't an actor. He's just Will Smith.

90% of what made akira bad was the animation, not sure what they are trying to pull off by doing a live action remake of it

Might be completely in the wrong here but I thought / was told that for the time Akira was made the animation was above par. I haven't watched to many animated films from the 80's but Akira did impress me; I found some of the scenes to be beautifully drawn.

I thought it was irony, I hope it is.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

anime features have always been rare, and were especially rare when akira was made.

if I remember correctly, the budget at the time was $8m, and even in recent years budgets for Japanese films have rarely been as high as that. low single figure millions, at most, usually.

agreed. i really like the cell-drawn anime from that era. part of the appeal of akira was that really, nobody had seen animation quite like that before

reminds me did anyone ever see the remake of ghost in the shell? (not ghost in the shell 2 which is a completely different movie, but ghost in the shell version 2.0 or some weird thing) they redid the entire first film with cg and it looks like absolute shit
