chaosmachine
Quote As protestors surged, a succession of windows were smashed and then demonstrators flooded into the building entrance. Security guards scattered and the handful of police inside were completely overrun. A few yards away, in surreal calm, guests carried on eating in the adjacent Pizza Express. keep calm and carry on eating pizza. Guest Wall Bird
Glad to hear this happened - excepting the violence. People never pull this shit in America so it gives me hope to see people standing up for something as fundamentally important as education. By the way; what was the outcome of those protests in France a few weeks ago? Or are they ongoing? spratters
It seems typical that it would be the students that are the ones protesting. They're not affected anywhere near as much as some of the rest of the population. Fair enough though. It was inevitable there would be some sort of civil unrest. They have butchered this country so far. It all went downhill when Cleggy sold all his supporters down the river, siding with the evil Conservatives. This was a protest against the lifting of university fees cap, which meant that unis could charge up to 9,000 pound a year. In combination, the government has slashed funding by a large percentage. This causes very real worries that education becomes a playground for the privileged, whereas the plebes can fuck off to vocational schools. Dale
Not too sure how the Open Uni becomes affected in all of this. As it stands right now, once I have finished my degree with the Open Uni (which is the same accredited BSc in Psychology as all other degrees across the UK [bPS accredited]), I will have very, very minimal debt. People seem deterred by distance learning. It's actually not as bad as some might think. We have tutorials once every couple of months, where I get to converse and share ideas with other students and my tutor. I'm working full time + doing my degree part time, so there's no need to worry about all these costs that other, full time students worry about. The downside is that it takes longer for me to finish my degree, which I'm not too concerned about anyway (I'm still very young). Depending on how much you earn as a salary per year, you may be entitled to grants from the Open Uni. It's worth checking out to anyone reading this who is from the UK and wants to take up further education. Always check the degree's accreditation as well. I would not have gone for the BSc Open Degree if it was not accredited by the British Psychological Society. spratters
They don't have to pay anything back until they are earning at least 21K. If they don't get up to 21K for years to come then the debt eventually gets written off. There's nothing terrible there that should be met by these huge protests. Like Bread I'm with the OU as well and have been paying full whack for anything I want to learn while still being in a low paid job. I'm still gonna get hit with everything else that is being ripped out of the economy like they are. The difference is they don't need to pay a thing back until they're earning 21K. Which I'm a way off at the moment. Guest Coalbucket PI
Eh, quite nice to see someone kick up a fuss about all this, even if they went about it like idiots. Won't it be 2-3 years before these fee changes come into action? Who is actually protesting? People in university now won't be affected so it leaves 16 year olds and they shouldn't be allowed out to demonstrate on a school night Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/61309-tory-hq-stormed/#findComment-1454854 Share on other sites
