I was listening to Pantera a couple nights ago and lamenting that most metal singers these days rely too much on imitating a common metal vocal style. Phil's one in a million. Surprisingly I've yet to really listen to Down, though I heard a few songs back in the day.

Nasum's Inhale/Exhale .. the haiku of metal. One of the better produced grindcore albums I know of, and the vocals are totally bearable.

I remember seeing their named mentioned here and there, but I totally forgot they existed and never checked them out. I like it quite a bit! It's more musical than most grindcore I've heard, and I like the production as well. Thanks for that.

Real shame what happened to Nasum, their singer died in that tsunami in December 2004 so they called it quits.

Just came across Pitchfork's 2011 metal recommendations. I don't listen to much new stuff so this was a nice little tour of current events for me, a lot of sludgy tracks and a couple of things I even liked.

the new opeth was motherfucking claypool wanky. i love opeth but heritage was disappointing.

i saw wolves in the throne room live in a tiny venue in victoria called norway house. i had a smoke with the band and they were retarded cool. excellent show and excellent men.

Yeah, a disturbing number of black metal fans don't know what the hell they're getting into when NSBM rears its stupid little head; it can slip under the radar a bit if you're just out to CONSUME ALL THE BLACK METALS. Or maybe those little blackened cracker metalheads just don't care?

Most black metal of course is happy to say fuck you to all Abrahamic religions and would welcome diversely ethnic former practitioners of said religions into the fold so long as they slaughter a few goats and wear wolf pelts. As it should be.
