That makes total sense, the cannes jury this year is

  The Hollywood reporter said:

Robert De Niro -- The Godfather

Uma Thurman -- The Star, Vol. 1

Jude Law -- The Star, Vol. 2

Olivier Assayas -- The Auteur

Johnnie To -- Action Man

Martina Gusman -- Productora y Actriz

Nansun Shi -- Action Woman

Linn Ullmann -- The Writer and The Daughter

Mahamat Saleh Haroun -- The Social Conscience

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

That list missed the most vital part of the jury.

A prayer beneath the Tree of Life

  Quote
Terrence Malick's new film is a form of prayer. It created within me a spiritual awareness, and made me more alert to the awe of existence. I believe it stands free from conventional theologies, although at its end it has images that will evoke them for some people. It functions to pull us back from the distractions of the moment, and focus us on mystery and gratitude.

Terence has very little to say with this one...

wow. really?

he did do his usual over-the-top quiet narration which is almost always unnecessary...but it was a beautiful movie.

i wish Q actually came to fruition...that sequence was fantastic....and although i was unimpressed at the beginning, the narrative of the family was great...and i could relate to a lot of those scenes.

malick for me is very little in terms of literal or narrative substance, he is one of the few directors in which while watching the film i experience 100% emotion...the story is almost worthless in terms of what intangible things are expressed over the course of the film.

its not the greatest movie ever, but its certainly worth a watch.

It's growing on me more and more... I pulled up this thread last night, shortly after watching the film in the theater...

I'm well aware TM does a non-linear film every once in a while... To me, as an artist... It's easy to assemble beautiful images... But to put them together to tell a story and convey a message is the hard part... TM didn't live up to his potential with this one...

I truly think this will be a film people will soon forget... :trashbear:

The movie was emotionally very strong visually and musically (particularly at the National Geographic part midway through the movie). I will probably watch it at the theater a second time.

i think it does tell a story though. problem is, the story isn't "told to you". you piece it together based upon your own feelings drawn from those flickering images malick is showing you.

this is pretentiousness perhaps, but this isn't some art-house film where a camera filming a square for thirty minutes is a metaphor for sadness....it would seem to me that he knows that those images conjure up something very particular for him and perhaps knowing that it conjures similar, but not same emotions from the audience.

i would almost venture to say that failure to enjoy the movie isn't the fault of the viewer OR Malick....instead the failure of both sides to gain understanding of such a symbolic transference of emotional knowledge.

good god i sound like an ass .

Guest the anonymous forumite

Went to see it this evening.

During the first 30 minutes, I thought this was going to be in my all-time top 3, just behind 2001. But then, cgi dinosaurs appeared, wich was a major turn off. They were so unnecessary. I enjoyed the family story. Some people walked out.

Another turn off was when they all meet in what I consider to be the afterlife (the beach). How kitsch and naive was that...The ending was ok.

The narrative voice was too much and yes, over-the-top. The montage could have been better.

A good film, despite its weaknesses.

8/10

I saw this a couple of weeks ago and it is indeed incredibly beautiful but I certainly wouldn't want to watch it for 6 hours!!!

For those thinking of seeing it, it really is a "cinema" film, I can't imagine enjoying it as much without a huge picture and huge sound.

The way Malick films the sun in 'The Tree of Life' is what makes me not like it. The story is boring and personal as fuck. The sun appears in certain shots and is always starred out like you can only see the lens flare and not the sun. Malick shows no respect for the sun so this is why I am cannot like this film. Oh yes and there are stupid cgi dinosaurs in it. The end is totally over the top metaphorical bullshit. The universe scene is the best part about the film and it was mainly created by Douglas Trumbull, a genius of visual wizardry. Now Terrence is supposedly making four films at once http://www.aintitcool.com/node/51807. Good luck with that Mr Malick. I bet all four of them are not masterpieces. I do love 'The Thin Red Line' though.
