Reactions to Confield when it was released?

Recommended Posts

I bought Draft on day of release and only 'got' it last summer. Other than Surripere, it sounded like a load of aimless clicking to me. Now it seems quite beautiful.

Confield took me a couple of months to get into but I didn't struggle for long. It seemed a bit dull at first, rather than confusing/complex, but over time I began to understand it more and more. It's always struck me as an ambient album, though, unlike everything else since Amber. Even the rhythmic elements, of which there are many, seem to add texture rather than pace. It's always struck me as a huge massive onslaught of super-fast creeping plants that are hastily taking over an entire planet, and the sounds that would accompany that.

Oh no, that came out as Draft bashing, and I think it's a fine record. But there is something elusive about Confield that Draft lacks for me. Draft's a fine and, yes, subtle record, and I do like it a lot, hell I even bought the promo cassette. Maybe it's the memory associations of Confield or something. It seems more organic than Draft which feels more measured. Same reason I prefer Oversteps to Quaristice.

"Boring" was only in the context of "slightly boring compared to Confield", i.e. it might get 9/10 for fascination if Confield got 10.

i got draft right away and i like it a lot

i think every album is very different from the next so it comes down to personal preference.

uviol is the best fucking thing ever. pen expers is too. i think my thoughts move in ways similar to confield patterns, it's been my favorite pretty much since i first heard it.

Agreed (though for me its creeping insects) I also feel it has alot in common with Oversteps in the way the sounds on each song seam to drift seamlessly in an out and beside each other, and can almost go unnoticed and sound "samey" if not paid the proper attention. I also find the two albums to be the most mood based of Autechres work.

Oversteps sounds like Confield sans pummeling beats and thrown into a large unfamiliar space where it finds itself vulnerable and tentive, swirling out antennae to gauge its new environment.

i agree with this. draft, to me, seems like a more polished, focused confield.

Another way to put it is that Draft is like a more boring Confield.

please leave

Started listening to Autechre around the time Chiastic Slide came out and most of their albums were immediately enjoyable for me up until LP5 which at the time was a bit to get used to, then with each successive one it took a bit more time to sink in, but was ultimately more rewarding. Confield took me the better part of a year to really sink into. I wasn't sure what they were up to, but it seemed interesting so I stuck with it, playing it 2 or 3 times a week, then one day it just fell into place for me. Draft was a bit more immediate for me; Untilted (lol I only realized it's actually called Untilted as opposed to Untitled a few months ago :duh: ) for some reason took me several months to dig into properly; Quaristice actually only really clicked with me recently, and Oversteps I'm still in the process of digesting properly. I'm a bit slow on the take.

Oh yes, how dare I articulate an opinion different to yours. How about making a case instead of pouting?

Draft just isn't much fun. I put it on a week ago, for the first time in ages, it was loud, and the room was dark and Xylin Room is still the freshest sound but a few minutes in I'd had enough and put on Acroyear II instead. Draft is so cold and functional. Confield is spacious, organic, even magical in Parhelic Triangle. I love how that and Sim Gishel sound like they've been lived in, they're disorientating. I don't enjoy the flow of the music in Draft, only the sounds used, but that can't sustain my interest.

Confield is like a pool of dark iron ore being slowly injected into your brain.

and yet there is much to like in Draft, I doubt I have ever heard chewier funk hip-hop than 6IE.CR, it sticks to your ears like treacle.

hell yeah, that track is one thick slice of pie.

i like to listen to individual tracks on draft, especially alternating between 6ie.cr, surripere, v-proc, and reniform puls. the album has a good flow to it but i don't always feel compelled to take in the whole thing like i do with confield.
